If Francis Mapes actually visited Jamestown and served there under Captain John Smith, who left Jamestown in 1609, then his first child would have had to have been born afterward. Some accounts give 1625 as the date of the marriage, but if that is true than some of the eight children listed above most have belonged to another Mapes family.
