Welcome to a New Year!
It's hard to imagine, but here we are, ready to start a new school year. We begin with many new opportunities and some new trials for all involved in the vocal music program at Charles City High School.
As most of you know, Janiece Bergaland has retired after many years of service to the 7th, 8th and 9th grade vocalists. The school board, upon recommendation of the administration, elected not to replace Mrs. Bergland at the high school, so those duties will fall to long time high school director, Larry Michehl. This increased work load will result in some major and several minor changes in the way the program works.
Let's all focus on the possibilities of this school year, and try not to dwell on the negatives. While this is easier said than done, it is imperative for the success of the program and the educational well being of the students.

As was mentioned earlier, High School Vocal Director Larry Michehl will now have the entire vocal music program beginning this fall. This will result in several changes to the program. Check out the Performance Groups page to see a brief overview of how the program will be handled this year.
With the increase in size of the Concert Chohir, it will be necessary to purchase additional choir robes for this group. Since we are not permitted to use school funds for these uniforms, it will be necessary to raise these funds in another manner. We will be in contact with parents to solicit your assistance in this endeavor.

With the reduction of teaching personnel, you may have noticed there is no longer a seperate 9th grade (Canta Nova) and 10th grade choir. These groups have been combined into one choir to allow for the same number of periods to be available for voice lessons during the day.
The Ninth Edition (freshman show choir) will no longer be in existance. There is no time (or money) available to maintain this group.

There are several special activities in which the groups will be involved this year. A short list is included. (Links will be added for additional information as it becomes available,) Check the Calendar link for dates, times, and locations.
Group Voice Lessons will still be given all vocal music students... but students will now need to be pulled out of class for these lessons. In the past students were scheduled for lessons out of their study hall periods. With the increased numer of lessons, this was no longer an option.
Before and after school times will be for extra rehearsals (All State, Opus, Comet Connection) and for make-up lessons. Regular lessons will no longer be scheduled during these times.
