Traditionally, a woman wore a double skirt or 2 skirts. The top layer, made of a superior material, was kept up and away from mud and dirt roads, and was let down when she wanted to look more presentable. The folds of the pulled-up layer were useful for carrying vegetables, eggs and other goods.
