The Complete List

May 17
Two artists I have held in high esteemed have passed within two weeks of each other. Today came the news that Donna Summer, arguably the most popular and critically acclaimed disco "queen" of her glittery era, has passed away at the age of 63. The cause of death, an illness kept from public knowledge, was cancer. Disco is a movement that has gone from peak to valley to peak again, seeing a re-emergence of respect in the past decade, and Summer was one of the artists whose initial revolutionary work was lauded as crucial in developing much of today's dance and electronic music. Her work in the late 70's with Italian producer Giorgio Moroder - especially the 1979 double album Bad Girls and 12" behemoth "I Feel Love" - are the peaks of disco, masterpieces just as relevant today as back then. Her latest album Crayons was released to acclaim in 2008, and she was reportedly at work on a follow-up, keeping news of her illness private. Her contributions to our modern music will not be forgotten.

Several personal factors and general apathy have kept me from regularly updating this website with whatever news happens, but today came the unbelievable news that Adam Yauch, also known as MCA of the Beastie Boys, passed away at the age of 46. Although the cause was not immediately disclosed, he had been diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and was battling it ever since. The Beasties are a golden institution, starting out as tongue-in-cheek hip-hop vanguards and graduating into something more refined, elder statesmen of music and activism who are now members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. MCA was the gravel-voiced foil for the nasal attack of Ad-Rock and Mike D, and was the most vocally philanthropic of the group: Buddhist, a supporter of Tibetan rights (and in that guise charity concert promoter), founder of independent film distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories, director and visionary of the majority of the Beasties' uniquely memorable music videos, and through it all a seemingly down-to-earth and soft-spoken family man who never relished the limelight. His passing at such a young age, with decades of work to have come, is a massive blow to the music and film industries, and he will be dearly missed by the millions who grew up with the Beasties and admired Yauch's work ethic.
