News

2002/11/26 - Brave New Graves returns in a new time slot, Mondays at 9pm on CFMH 92.5 FM! After hosting The Crawdad Café regularly in previous months, I felt the desire to restart BNG. Hope you can catch it!

2002/08/21 - No irrelevant tales of sexual exploits, just music-related updates. What webpage do you think you're on anyway?
Lady Chatterly's Hovercraft was created in the fall of 2001, never having been digitized and made ready for release until recently. The output from the LCH sessions was so copious that there was spillover, and whathappenedinthehallway, another side project in itself, was born of the surplus. Also, I did a distribution trade with Ryosuke from HMW a few months ago, and I have four noise cassettes up for grabs.
While you're looking at the Eleven Wave page, you may notice that extra > underneath where it says "read reviews of Eleven Wave Releases here". I can't seem to get rid of it, no matter what I do. ARGH! If you're an HTML wizard who has an easy solution, get in touch with me please!
So very busy lately. May even get busier.

2002/05/14 - Angelfire has reduced the maximum free webspace from 50Mb to 20Mb, so I've had to remove a lot of stuff to fit. I'd be pissed off if I cared anymore, but my interest in what this website used to stand for has diminished.

2002/05/11 - This is only a minor bit of news, and it happened more than a year ago, but to me it's news... my favourite track off of NIGHTWAVES: the Compilation Vol. 1 received airplay on the 2000/12/01 broadcast of Brave New Waves. Not only that, but they opened they show with it! Way to go, Mr. Patey!

2002/04/17 - Let's just say I've been wasting a lot of time and leave it at that.
As things stand now, Wa Mooger Coco will probably be the last CREON CD-R for a long time, maybe forever, it's too early to tell. Also, you may notice on that several older Eleven Wave releases are no longer available. Some may still be found at Backstreet Records in Saint John, but if not I hope you have your copies already!
This website may be dying a slow death.

2002/02/14 - Yes, there's yet another CREON CD-R out. I had dropped one off at CFMH Tuesday night, and Christian made me feel guilty for not informing him. Well, it's officially released now.
But why the caveat on the Eleven Wave page? Well, to be honest, I'm not as happy with this disc as say, Exsanguination, or Build Your Own Thanatron. There are a few tracks I think are passable in a disposable kind of way, but some are there just for some little gimmick or theme that I thought was neat, even if you have to sit through the boring parts to hear them, or hear them repeated ad nauseam. Thus the $5 price tag. That and I figured I wasn't losing enough money, heh heh. No hype here, ladies and gentlemen.
In the wake of the Console to Nothingess release party (the listening party didn't happen by the way) I am more determined than ever not to perform live.

2002/01/21 - Added a few reviews by Steven Marlow, a chap who has a radio show waayyyy over on the west coast, with a penchant for synthetic mooger.
Troy Chenier has asked me to compile a listening party CD-R for his upcoming "Console to Nothingness" release party on February the first. I've been juggling tracks contributed by local artists as well as comrades from The Ceiling and Wreck Age Recordings. At first I had around four hours of stuff, but since then I've had to chop it down to just over 2 hours. RoB forsees everyone leaving during The Infant Cycle's gloriously squelchy "Dancemix", but I figure they'll have to get through Holoskanks' "Pornoism" first, heh heh. Also, some brand new End of Time material will be presented, as well as a track from the latest collaboration between Mr. Patey and I. Anyone coming to the listening party portion of the evening expecting to hear a bunch of rave music will be sorely disappointed, if not horrified at times.
Health problems persist, and I fear my condition may be none of those I previously considered. Anyway, I'm supposed to see a specialist in a few weeks time, knock on wood!
On a brighter note, I introduced Mr. Patey to the wonderful world of multiplayer Sin. I taught him some of the basics, showed him around some of the maps, explained the rules of CTF to him, et cetera. In spite or constant coaching for him to keep moving, I sometimes caught him with his back turned. However, he did occasionally have moments of glory, as Sitting Duck once had in the 56k modem days. I think he may even have managed to frag Stubbo(POD) a couple of times in deathmatch!

2001/11/01 - Lots of news, some good some bad
First the good: Electrobash happened October 20th at the Gallery Connexion in Fredericton. This was an eclectic mix of maritime electronic artists that has changed my perspective on live music. If you missed it for whatever reason, you can check out my account of it here.
The bad: health problems continue. Prostitis? Sciatica? Spina bifida occulta? Your guess is as good as mine at this point. I just hope the pain subsides soon. 8 months is a long time to be in discomfort.
And the ugly: we're trying to get a Vibe connection and home network set up in the apartment. I don't often use profanities on this site, but forgive me when I say... SWEET MERCIFUL FUCKIN' JESUS! First, I couldn't get multiplayer gaming to work in the network. Second, connecting to Vibe has been consistently impossible for us thus far. Tech support led us in circles a few times, I tried to download drivers that didn't seem to help at all, and a trip to the computer shop simply brought us back to square one, $30 later. But you know what they say in the technical assistance biz: "it's cheaper to effect a 'solve' over the telephone than it is to actually send a technician". Not unlike a sentiment arising in some health "care" circles that maintains money can be saved by denying patients medical treatment. I'm just glad this is but an ISP and not a provider of pancreas transplants, or I'd be dead by now!

2001/09/11 - Funny coincidence that so many CD-R's are being released on this soon to be notorious day in history.
In addition to Exsanguination and the self-titled WORMCHILD disc, Eleven Waves is also distributing The Infant Cycle's latest release, Remote. The Infant Cycle might be classified as ambient noise, not unlike Wreck Age Recording's Archangel. But you'd have to hear it for yourself! Copies are available at Backstreet Records in Saint John as well as through Eleven Wave.

2001/08/24 - "the CREON song count is currently 282" at LAST! After six months and a day since writing the last CREON song, I've finally gotten the time to finish the first new one since then! This is also the first CREON track to be done with my new studio setup: Reality sequenced by Cakewalk Express Gold. Unfortunately, I still can't put in as much working time as I used to, what with the health and all. Nonetheless, I plan to put some more material together soon (knock on wood) and release the next CD-R, hopefully before the end of September.

2001/07/01 - Okay, I noticed a little change in the way the counter info is saved here on Angelfire. Previously, HTML pages with the counter cgi and the .htm extension would have their counter files saved as .htm.cnt, instead of just .cnt like files with the .html extension. Recently it switched to include the .htm extension, and I discovered the new .cnt files for the hits my Eleven Wave and BNG pages have received since then. I was wondering why the counters seemed to stand still for so long! Heh.

2001/06/28 - I appear in an article in the June 22 - July 5 issue of Here magazine (Volume 2, Number 9). My fifteen minutes of fame are over!
Continuing physical complaints are slowing down music production. Slowing down just about everything really. Funny how all you can think about when something is wrong is getting your good health back. Maybe someday, but I fear never is also possible.

2001/04/19 - That's-a one big-a update! As you may have noticed there's some new Nightwaves articles, the current cover artwork, narcissistic CREON icons for people with nothing better to put on their desktop, a new link, and perhaps best of all, a song from my self-titled CD-R for download in Ogg Vorbis format.
What on earth is Ogg Vorbis you ask? It's a compressed audio format comparable to MP3, yet different in that it's both open-source and lisence-free. How the hell do I play the Vorbis format you ask? Don't worry, if you've got Sonique, you're set, and if you prefer Winamp you can download a DLL from www.vorbis.com to let Winamp play this format.
You may also have noticed the CREON song count has been stuck on 281 for quite some time now. There's a number of reasons for this. I'm recently recovering from a few physical ailments (don't ask. No really, DON'T!). Aside from falling apart, I've been working more on my side project with RoB Patey. Also, I've been tinkering with Reality once in a while to try and get a start on building some strange new sound libraries. One such Reality bankset is intended for the upcoming remix of theVoid's "Wopsul Flood". My last excuse is my recent attempts to get a little exercise everyday to improve my health somewhat.
Fear not, I project that by the late summer not only will the project with RoB be completed (which will be cool, trust me!), but there should also be a new CREON CD-R out as well. This next disc will contain a lot of relatively recent tracks, ones that even my inner circle aren't very familiar with! I know you guys will forgive my slowness, oh yes!

2001/03/14 - Well, it looks like David Tatlock was right... "Morris' Moonshuffle", Andrew Duke's track on Nightwaves: The Compilation Vol. 1, was played on the January 12th broadcast of CBC Radio 2's Brave New Waves. See it in writing for yourself here!

2001/02/27 - Gary Flanagan appeared on CBC radio one on 2001/02/26 around 4:45 pm, where a few of his tracks were played and he was interviewed about synthpop in general. Way to go ol' chap!
Also, Eleven Wave releases will no longer be made available in computer-grade CD-R. What few CD-R's I've sold have all been of the audio-optimised variety. There are still some titles available in the computer-grade format, but after these are sold off all future copies will be strictly audio-optimised.

2001/02/07 - Well, some more radio play on Italian program Chain the Door, check the link here. Thanks again Maurizio!

2001/01/18 - On the 17th, CFMH officially went city-wide. Jud "Ojud" Crandall and I appeared in a news segment about CFMH on Global on the 12th at 6:00 and 11:00pm.
Good ol' Maurizio! He's played a track from Gary's third album on his radio show Chain the Door. See the playlist here

2001/01/03 - After a long, excruciating wait, CFMH is finally ready to go city-wide! Tonight I had my first of two test broadcasts. Official broadcasting begins on January 17th, so get your dials and car stereos set!
Another bit of good news, it seems my Angelfire webspace has increased to 50 MB without my knowing it, so I've decided to post some of my songs in MP3 format on my music page.

2000/12/20 - It took me a couple of months, but I've finally taken heed to a suggestion by RoB Patey to have samples on the Eleven Wave page. They're in a RealAudio format, like the ones on my music page.
I just got an email from Jud Crandall about the delays in getting CFMH up and running. Apparently the construcion company they initially hired to setup the tower gave it low priority. CFMH is now expected to go on air in the new year... the new millenium at that! They have to play Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" for their first broadcast! That would be indeed neat.

2000/12/07 - If you've been watching the song count lately you'll see I haven't been racking up that many CREON songs like I used to. This is due first to the studio having been moved, and also because work is currently being done on the side-project with RoB Patey.
On the Nightwaves front: good news. Gary says he's ever so slowly working away at issue 8 with what free time he has. Tenative release time is early 2001.

2000/11/22 - Not only is there yet another CREON release out, but also a collection of Gary Flanagan tracks entitled Dressed in Black.
My "studio" has been moved from the blue room to the "cicuitboard", integrating my computer as part of the setup. Can realtime software synthesis be far behind? Well, that depends on how much a copy of Reaktor or Reality will cost me. Looks like those clothes from high school are going to have to last me a couple more years!

2000/11/14 - It seems the Nightwaves compilation has gotten some airplay on the Italian radio program Chain the Door, first on October the 14th, and again on November 11th. The latter playlist features a track from Gary's latest Ninthwave release as well.
Speaking of Gary Flanagan, within the next week or so (if everything goes smoothly) you can expect to see an Eleven Wave release of his material, as well as the latest collection of CREON tracks.
And one last bit of info, RoB Patey and I have been collaborating on a side project since late August. We probably won't have enough material for a full CD's worth for a couple of months, but what we've put together so far is pretty twisted!

2000/10/11 - There are a few copies of Build Your Own Thanatron and Nightwaves: the Compilation available at Backstreet Records for a reduced price.
I've seen copies of Saint John 2000 (awesome cover art BTW), and "Spark of Life" is on it. It's also available at Backstreet.
On the downside, RoB Patey did not get on the compilation, though at one point it appeared "Spiralling into Infinity" from The End of Time would be on it. Maybe Saint John kids aren't ready for RoB's experimental material.
One last thing, Electrogarden.com has been down for some time now, so I don't have any MP3's anywhere online at the moment.

2000/09/23 - First of all, RoB Patey has allowed me to release his third and final Ribcage CD on my Eleven Wave page... if you like your music creepy, check it out.
Second, it appears I am indeed going to be on BBQ Records' Saint John 2000 compilation. The last I heard, "Spark of Life" was the CREON track selected to appear. I guess we'll know for sure when it's released on October 6th. Go to the BBQ records website for more info.

2000/09/19 - The Freenet has been really crappy lately, so if you visit my site and something has gone wrong (e.g. the music page) it was because I haven't been able to connect to fix things and update. I really have to get a better ISP one of these days... I guess you get what you pay for.

2000/09/05 - That's right, the NIGHTWAVES compilation is finally out! 14 tracks by several Maritime synthetic musicians! Think of it as a sort of electronic equivalent of Chuck Teed's Saint John's Finest compilation. However, the bands on NIGHWAVES: the Compilation Vol. 1 are for the most part total unknowns, at least here in Saint John (possibly with the exception of the Nova Scotian contributors).
In retrospect, I think Gary and I could have organized a little sooner, and his moving complicated things further. And it turns out that François Marceau didn't actually have any finished material he wanted to submit at the time, Alex Wheill's email address went kerplunk, and David Tatlock was unhappy with his signal-to-noise ratio. Oh well, if there's ever a sequel to NtC1, they're more than welcome to a spot on the disc.
To illustrate the low-budget nature of everything I do, some of you may notice wee bits of distortion on one or two of the tracks. That's what happens when you try to master a disc without good monitor speakers and limited software! Still, I think it's a pretty neat selection of tracks, yeb'm!
Anyway, if you want the info, go to the brand-spanking new Eleven Wave Recordings page. That's the so-called "record label" I've been wanting to start for a while now. And I'm working on a disc of older CREON material as well as planning to release the third Ribcage CD-R. Keep your eye on that page!

2000/08/14 - Good news and bad news. First the good: Gary and I are excitedly planning a compilation for Nightwaves issue #7. Actually, it won't be included with the 'zine (like with Chain DLK), but will be available for purchase from Gary or I. This way the 'zine can stay free and Gary and I can minimize our losses from producing and duplicating the comp. Anyway, so far we've got tracks from Rob Patey, Joshua Darrell, Andrew Duke, and François Marceau, as well as our own material. We hope to get a few more contributions before moving forward and putting this thing out. This is gonna be cool!
More good news, I may be appearing on Chuck Teed's compilation Saint John's Finest 2, a follow-up to its very successful predecessor. Knock on wood!
Also, expect to see at least one new CREON CD-R in the coming months... as long as I don't run out of money!
Okay, now the BAD news: Gary is going to be moving to Ontario soon to attend university. I always hated the "back-to-school" season! I'll miss our little get-togethers of music and twisted humour. But until he returns, at least for a visit, there's always email!

2000/07/16 - Updated the banners page with all the code in text areas for each banner. I figured this would be the best route since not everyone uses Internet Explorer to be able to Ctrl+C from the properties dialog box. Heck, you can't even do it with Windows 98 SE! Damn you, Microsoft!

2000/07/12 - Haven't been to Electrogarden.com in a while, so today I checked it. After a long spell of having no rating, Mushizo has been given a generous three-and-a-half stars! Okay, so they're not really stars, they're sort of blue orby things, but you understand the device. Still, in spite of most of my MP3's getting decent ratings, probably better than they deserve, I think Elecrogarden would be better off without the ratings system. It's just too subjective. People might be dissuaded from downloading a song that is given a poor rating, while songs with high ratings may be downloaded frequently, only to have people find them overrated. And I have an unconfirmed suspicion that certain artists (*cough*lectrotheticbellion) or their representatives have given themselves perfect ratings of 5/5 for every criterion. I wouldn't even give Tomita or Ray Lynch 5/5 in everything for @#$!! sakes!
Sorry, I had to vent. Had a bad day. I guess though it's good that someone out there liked Mushizo.

2000/06/05 - Just a few days ago I found out from the rumours section of the Giraffecycle Webzine that Gary Flanagan is working on his second Ninth Wave album. An email from Gary confirmed this. I wonder if this will be comprised mostly of material I haven't heard yet... perhaps those many tracks he never had the time to mix down will make an appearance? He tells me that lyrically this time around will be a little more serious than Anthems, which was predominantly about dancing and clubbing.

2000/04/30 - This month saw a momentous occasion: the government finally made its first payments of the pay equity settlement. I thought they were just going to stall forever, but I'm glad to say I was wrong! Still, it's been about 15 years that this money has been owed to thousands of Canadians.

2000/04/02 - Some of you may notice that I changed the email addresses on every page so that you can't just click or copy and paste the address. This is because when your address is spelled out it can be harvested by spam spiders and make you a target for spam, which I have become quite fed up with lately. I encourage anyone reading this to do the same. Remove any "mailto:" links and substitute @ with [at] and . with [dot]. For example, "yourname@email.com" becomes "yourname [at] email [dot] com". This may not be very convenient, but if a human being really wants to email you, they can go through the trouble.

2000/03/28 - The first broadcast of my campus radio show, Brave New Graves, is scheduled for March 29th at 7:00pm. Besides meeting a few content requirements, it'll be mostly synthetic, Asian, and classical music. I realize that I should get some more CD's if I can in the near future, so that there will be all the more material to play. I just hope I don't get sick or something before tomorrow.

2000/03/26 - I may be taking up the position of DJ at CRSJ in the near future. Stay tuned.

2000/03/15 - Build Your Own Thanatron, the very first official CREON CD-R is released today. It's not a very fancy production, aside from the colour graphics folk will know it's a CD-R and not a commercially duplicated CD. The brand I'm currently using is much better than computer-grade CD-R's, but not as good as the very best ones optimised for audio purposes. As a result, those of you with old CD players might have trouble when skipping a lot or when attempting to program the tracks to play in a different order, but for the most part they should play just fine if you only skip the rare track (which, considering the nature of my music, you'll want to do at some point!). But if I can track down (and afford) better ones, I'll quite likely upgrade the quality if I sell about 20 or so copies. You can find out more about Thanatron and any possible future releases on the new Discography page.

2000/02/08 - I finally reveal to Gary my latest "secret project", an interview with RAY LYNCH! The interview was completed on January 21st, but I've had to keep it hush hush as Gary occasionally checks my site, and I wanted it to be one helluva surprise. Many thanks to Ray for his time, and especially to Kathleen for being so diligent in answering my emails! I hope they don't mind the RealAudio sample of "The Temple" on my Desert Island Discs page... I just had to let others hear it. So purdy!

2000/01/26 - Two MP3's I've uploaded to Electrogarden have been posted for public download today ("Zoophagia" and "Rebuilding Babel"). You can also expect to see two more in the next couple of days, "Optronic" and "Mushizo".

2000/01/09 - Today marks four years of CREON, for better or for worse. I've also decided that I will update the Real Audio samples on my music page every 100 hits or so (unless I one day get too much traffic to bother, but that's doubtful!). Gary's page will have a new sample added once in a while, with an old one removed, kinda like cycling. Unfortunately I'm having trouble connecting to the Angelfire FTP server these days, so I anticipate it to be a pain to have to upload everything via their website login (groan!). I hope it clears up somehow, but as I've learned with computers, just about anything could be responsible for the problem, these machines are so damn complex!

1999/12/30 - Gary tells me that he may have to put Nightwaves on hiatus when he attends school in the fall of 2000, because there would be no way he could manage the many responsibilities of study and self-publishing at once. However, I am considering the idea of taking the reins of NW at that time. Indeed, some things should be easier for me, having ready access to a computer, and the ability to abuse government printers and photocopying machines. But that's not to say it wouldn't be a challenge filling Gary's shoes. Any success Nightwaves has enjoyed over this past year has been due entirely to his initiative and hard work. He's paved the way for those of us who have contributed to the 'zine thus far, and for those of us who may continue to do so after he passes it on. Anyway, it'd be a bit premature to go on much more at this point, but you can definitely expect a big update in the coming year!

1999/12/12 - I may be appearing on the CKDU 97.5 FM East Coast Experimental Sound compilation, due mid-January of 2000.
I also have created a separate page for my banners so as to reduce the load time of the index page.

1999/12/01 - ONLINE AT LAST!
I got fed up trying to rely on the Freenet's webserver (the guy only tried to contact me once, and I was out for Thai food!), so I opted to upload here at Angelfire. The pop-up windows are annoying, I know, but they're a necessary evil I'm afraid. The glory of such web ads is that you don't have to click on them or buy whatever they're selling. That's the good side of capitalism!
