Las vías ópticas constituye la transmisión de los impulsos nerviosos desde la retina hasta la corteza cerebral a través del nervio óptico. Es la parte fibrosa que forma la "parte blanca del ojo" y tiene una función de protección. En su zona exterior está recubierta por una mucosa transparente llamada conjuntiva, cuya irritación da lugar a las conocidas y frecuentes conjuntivitis. Es la zona "sensible" del aparato visual. Es donde se deberían formar las imágenes que vemos para poder "verlas" con nitidez. Su parte anterior es ciega y su sensibilidad va en aumento conforme se va alejando de la zona anterior. El punto de máxima sensibilidad es una pequeña hendidura llamada FÓVEA, que es donde se encuentra una mayor concentración de las células responsables de la sensibilidad de la retina: CONOS y BASTONES. El CUERPO CILIAR es la zona media, formado por los PROCESOS CILIARES (encargados de la secreción del líquido que rellena la cámara anterior y que se llama HUMOR ACUOSO) y el MÚSCULO CILIAR, encargado de variar la curvatura del cristalino para poder enfocar a distintas distancias.
