Community Radio Developer

The Institute for Media, Policy, and Civil Society, IMPACS, is a Canadian charitable organization committed to the protection and expansion of democracy and to the strengthening of civil society. The International Media Program fosters free, critical, and, effective media worldwide to enhance the media's role in the process of democratic development, good governance, and public sector accountability.

IMPACS seeks a motivated intern to work in its Afghanistan project as a community radio developer. The successful candidate will collaborate with the project director in the development of community radio stations and the set up of a radio network across Afghanistan. He/she will be responsible of overseeing the complete process of at least two community radio stations, from identification of local partners through going on air.

Qualifications

International working experience required
Strong oral and written communications background
A minimum of two years experience in community radio
Strong fundraising and management skills
Experience in identifying and implementing training activities
Good financial management knowledge
Flexible and independent working style with strong solving problem skills
Ability to work in remote and difficult environments
Knowledge of Dari/Farsi and/or Pashto an asset
The successful candidate will be working at the IMPACS office in Kabul for a period of six months. Extensive travel throughout Afghanistan will be required. IMPACS will provide all living expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, insurance, and a small stipend for personal expenses according to the local economic needs.

Job Description

The community radio developer will have the following responsibilities:

Fundraising

Write funding proposals to donors and funders
Assist new stations to raise funds through alternative and creative avenues
Help develop a long-term sustainability plan for community radio stations

Training

Identify training needs and implement training plans
Request journalism and radio production trainers if required
Build up a library of training materials for each radio station to share amongst the network
Help develop an IMPACS training manual tailored to each community radio
Plan management training sessions for community radio managers

Coordination

Identify boards of directors for each community radio and work collaboratively to build their capacity
Plan and budget resources for the effective operation of the radio stations
Assist radio stations in financial management
Develop a marketing plan involving all network radio stations
Assist radio partners to write operational policies for the station

Reporting

Write weekly reports to the project director on the progress of implementation of activities
Contribute to reports to funders as necessary
Write weekly press releases about the progress of each project in the field to be published on IMPACS website, E-Catalyst newsletter, and mailing lists

He/she will design and produce radio programs and develop training activities as needed, and will assist the project director in strategic planning to support the sustainability of the radio stations.

Job Description

The radio producer will have the following responsibilities:

Production

Produce radio programs on human rights, women, and other development issues for community radio stations across the country
Design and produce elections coverage campaigns
Produce Public Service Announcements (PSA) in close collaboration with local NGOs
Management and Development

Oversee management of radio production projects, including setting schedules and radio programming
Develop and monitor project budgets
Work with IMPACS staff journalists and partners in the field to generate project ideas, conduct research, write scripts and design structure of programs
Identify new projects and partners
Participate in the development of strategic plans for sustainability of community radio stations
Training

Identify training needs and coordinate training sessions for IMPACS and partner radio stations
Train and assist IMPACS partner radio stations in radio production

Reporting

Write weekly reports on the status of activities to the project director
Write weekly press releases about the progress of each project to be published on IMPACS website, E-Catalyst newsletter, and mailing lists
Assist the project director in fundraising proposal reviewing and writing
Contribute to reports to funders as necessary
