1. Integrity and reliability are the most important quality that a public employee especially that of a politician should maintain otherwise the institution gets corrupted. 2. Poor immigrants are the greatest investment a country like Canada should bring in for they are motivated by dreams that money immigrants already have. We brought (in) lots of those money immigrants in the 80s from Hong Kong and surrounding areas, most settled in BC, did they bring their money to Canada ? No, they fried us with our own oil and most of the locals moved to nearby towns where the cost of living is much lower than where those so called investors settled.  Would you want to know more and why? Info: This paper explores gendered experiences of Irish and Scottish male settlers in Upper Canada during the first half of the nineteenth century. The image of aggressive and wild Celtic races settling in the British colony applied at times to both Protestants and Catholics during the period before 1850, making each denomination and ethnicity an object for possible scorn and rejection by the colonial establishment unless they could prove their loyalty to the imperial framework. This paper will examine three men -- Ogle R. Gowan, founder of the Orange Order in British America, Alexander Macdonell, the Bishop of Kingston and defender of Scottish Catholics and Highlanders in Upper Canada, and Peter Aylen, the nefarious leader of the Irish Catholic Shiner gang on the Ottawa River -- in order to explore the various negotiations Irish and Scottish men in Upper Canada had to make time and again with notions of manliness, loyalty, kinship, ethnic and religious discrimination, and the constant pressure from the establishment to be more 'British'.

Theme: Transcending Disciplinary Frames

March 24 and 25, 2017, School of Irish Studies, McEntee Reading Room (1455 de Maisonneuve West, Room H 1001.01 – 10th floor)
How do disciplinary 'frames' shape the way we see, engage with, and contest subjects within Irish Studies? What is to be gained when we transcend the perspectives of our field(s)?

'Frames' are often used as a means to define how we are provided with a certain reading or depiction of reality, which is often a hindrance to seeing fully or clearly.

And yet, frames can be broken, stretched, and otherwise transcended, often dynamically.

The struggle of Irish Studies to reach beyond its perimeters in pursuit of innovation through inter- and multi-disciplinarity and in single fields, is the focus of this conference. We seek to highlight the ways in which a new generation of scholars is using their research to negotiate, contest, and create new potential.

Assisted Dying Bill must protect doctors and other health care workers:

Justice Centre testifies before Parliament on Bill C-14 regarding conscience rights - OTTAWA: Today the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms will appear before Parliament's Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights to recommend changes to the Government of Canada's draft legislation on "medical assistance in dying" ("MAID").  The proposed legislation, Bill C-14, was tabled last month in response to the 2015 Supreme Court of Canada decision in Carter v. Canada (Attorney General) [Carter].  The Justice Centre will appear before the Standing Committee between 7:20 P.M. and 8:20 P.M. in Room 237-C, Centre Block.  Other witnesses include the Canadian Medical Association, Physicians Alliance Against Euthanasia, the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada and the Canadian Nurses Association. As explained in its Brief to the Committee, entitled Protections for Conscience Rights, the Justice Centre is pleased that Bill C-14 stays within the parameters established by the Supreme Court of Canada in Carter for a patient to qualify for MAID.   In order to fully comply with Carter, however, Bill C-14 must codify protections for the conscience rights of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care workers, as well as health care organizations and institutions, to refuse to participate in, and refuse to refer for MAID. Justice Centre staff lawyer Jay Cameron, author of its Brief to Parliament, stated, "It is in the best interest of all Canadians that those practitioners who care for patients on a daily basis be able to perform their duties with a clear conscience, and the knowledge that they have been true to both themselves and their perception of their medical and ethical mandate." For more information, please contact: Jay Cameron, staff lawyer, Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms: or (403) 909-3404 Background information The Supreme Court of Canada decision in Carter in no way compels doctors or other healthcare workers to cooperate unwillingly in providing MAID.  The Court expressly held in Carter that "nothing in the declaration of invalidity which we propose to issue would compel physicians to provide assistance in dying."  The Court "underline[d] that the Charter rights of patients and physicians will need to be reconciled." Thus, it is apparent that the Court intended Parliament's legislative response to address the issue of medical practitioners' conscience rights. Bill C-14 is not yet compliant in this regard.  The applicants in Carter neither sought nor received a Charter right to compel doctors and other healthcare practitioners to provide, or refer for, MAID. Despite this, provincial Colleges of Physicians, as well as Nurses' Associations have instituted requirements that their respective members participate in MAID, in disregard of conscience rights, on pain of professional sanction and reprisal. Parliaments' opportunity is manifest: the offending professional requirements violate both the law in Carter and the Charter protections under ss. 2(a) and 7. The Justice Centre's Brief to the Committee concludes: "Parliament can and should bring uniformity and clarity to the issue of conscience rights and MAID. Doctors, educators, medical students and the various Colleges would all benefit from the inclusion in Bill C-14 of the protections for conscience and religious rights, as Carter mandates."
