Ralph C. DeCow
ALTAMONT - Ralph C. DeCow, 85, of Altamont died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at the Labette County Medical Center emergency room.

He was born Feb. 3, 1920, in rural Bartlett to Clyde and Edna Pearl (Hurd) DeCow. His mother died when he was 4. He was raised by his father and stepmother Maggie May (Mozingo) DeCow.

He was a lifelong resident of Labette County and attended various schools. He graduated from Labette County Community High School and received a trade school diploma in agriculture.

He farmed near Bartlett until January 1947 when he moved to Altamont and operated a shoe and harness repair shop. He had various occupations, including working at Farmers Co-op and DHIA in Altamont. He retired from the maintenance department at Labette County High School in 1980.

He was an organizer and charter member of Altamont Saddle Club and was its first president. He also was a member of the Square Dance on Horses Team.

His hobby was his team and wagon, which he drove in parades. Following his retirement he spent many hours at Senior Citizens Center playing pool.

He married Berva M. Hagan on June 1, 1941, in Labette City. She survives of the home.

Survivors include three sons, Marvin Dale DeCow of Wichita, Ronald DeCow of Edna and Terry DeCow of Cherryvale; one daughter, Darlene Trollope of Parsons; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Maurice DeCow of Ogden, Utah, and Virgil DeCow of Wichita.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Connel DeCow; four sisters, Dorothy Stephens, Mildred Gilbert, Doris DeCow and Florence Francisco; and eight grandchildren.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont with the Rev. Fred Gates officiating. Burial will be in Lake Creek Cemetery in Bartlett. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Altamont.

Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association and mailed to the funeral home.
