Elevation: 8744 ft / 2665 m
Degree of Difficulty:
Moderate
Time to Complete Round Trip:5-7 hours
Information:
The Wedge is a beautiful mountain thrusting up on the East side of the Kananaskis trail highway, near Mt Kidd.
Where to Park:
Park at the Wedge Pond fishing and picnic area, on highway 40 (Kananaskis trail) about 30 km south of the TransCanada highway.
The Route (see photo below):
Follow the lefthand shore trail of Wedge Pond. You'll see a metal culvert and the rough trail begins just beyond this culvert to your left. Basically you make your way up a very rough trail which hugs the left hand side a stream which drains the NorthWest side of the Wedge. You won't be able to see this stream until you're about ten minutes into the bush, as it disappears underground before it reaches Wedge Pond.
Make noise because there are bears frequently in this area. I saw that the Park closes off the area from time to time because of bears.
After you emerge from the trees you have to make your way up a steep hill and then towards the NorthEast flank of the Wedge. You have a few options, so pick a line and start climbing the rock.
The summit ridge is narrow and fun, but suicidal in snowy conditions. There are two cairns on this ridge, the West cairn (easy to get to) and the East cairn (exposed and harder to get to, and higher up).
