Vermilion Peak, Kootenay Range, B.C.

Elevation: 2622 m

Degree of Difficulty:

Moderate

Time to Complete Round Trip:

7 hours

Information:

You will likely only be sharing this mountain with grizzlies. Make noise and bushwhack to the treeline. The summit ridge is a great deal of fun on Vermilion.

Where to Park:

Take Highway 93 and travel 11 km south of the continental divide. Vermilion is on the NorthEast side of the highway. What makes this mountain particularly interesting is that an old abandoned road is found high up above in the forest (see photo immediately below). Something is spooky about this overgrown road.

The Route (see photo below):

The idea is to find the avalanche gully and push yourself up this steep terrain towards the treeline. Once above the trees, head far right and up to Vermilion's ridge. Then have a fun time on the enjoyable terrain toward the summit. We had a good time except for the constant menace of thunder, which reminded us that lightning wouldn't be too far away. Overall, however, a good day.

Have fun enjoying the summit views, and return the same way.

Thank you for visiting Vermilion Peak and keeping it clean.
