Mount Rundle (West End), Banff, Alberta

Elevation: 9673 ft, 2949 m

Degree of Difficulty:

Easy

Time to Complete Round Trip:

5 to 6 hours

The West end of Mount Rundle is one of the most photographed mountains in the world, seen above the fairytale Banff Springs Hotel. This is a crowded mountain, but fun. Study the mountain from the flatness of Banff, and study the route photo below and you'll find your way easily.

Where to Park:

In the town of Banff, head for the Banff Springs Hotel golf course, beyond the Bow Falls. Park near the first hole you see on your right. If you're not allowed to park here (oh for God's sake the rule-Nazis run the world) then park at the Bow Falls parking lot and hike to the golf course.

The Route (see photo below):

The scramble route is to ascend the upward sloping "drafting table".

The mountain is obvious, and you'll find a trail, the Rundle/Spray River trail, skirting the west flanks of Rundle which will take you toward your goal. Follow the path up and switchback until you come to a fork. Don't go straight up, but take the right branch and continue toward the large drainage gully (see "G" in photo) separating the two Western Peaks on Rundle (your goal is the second one). Don't head up the gully! Cross over the gully and climb up the other side. There will be flagging or arrows marking the way.

You should experience no exposure on the simple route. . . if you do, you're in the wrong place.

After you find the correct route, just plod on up the dragon's back and treadmill scree until you hit the summit for beautiful views of Banff, Cascade Mountain, and the Bow Corridor.

Return the same way.

Thank you for visiting the summit of Mount Rundle and keeping it clean.
