Mount Indefatigable

Degree of Difficulty:

Very easy, brief exposure at top

Time to Complete Round Trip:

5 hours

Where to Park:

Mount Indefatigable is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta.

At a junction (near the King Creek Day Use area) on Highway 40 you will find the Kananaskis Lakes Trail. Turn west away from Highway 40 and follow the Kananaskis Lakes Trail southward to the farthest point. Park at the North Interlakes parking lot near the dam between the two lakes.

The Route (see photo below):

This one is obvious. Follow the Mt. Indefatigable hiking trail, just north of the dam

Make your way up the trail for about an hour until you see a rough trail forking to the left. You'll probably see other people making their way to the south summit, so route-finding skills aren't essential. Head up the east scree slopes and you'll find the south summit. To give you an idea of the ease of ascent, when I was there, a tour group of active retirees was at the summit. Some members of this group were quite old.

Enjoy the beautiful views and return the same way.

You may also want to try the North peak; instead of veering left on the regular trail as mentioned before, continue heading north past a park bench. Eventually you'll see a rough trail up to the North Summit. Near the summit, the rock is quite crumbly, so watch your head. Return the same way.

Avoid the South peak to North peak traverse, which resulted in a woman's death a few years ago.

Thank you for visiting the summit of Mount Indefatigable and keeping it clean.
