Mount Buller, Spray Lakes Alberta

Elevation: 9203 ft / 2805 m

Degree of Difficulty:

Easy/Moderate

Time to Complete Round Trip:

6 to 8 hours

Information:

Keep in mind that you will be accessing Mount Buller from the side opposite to the one facing the road. You have to hike Buller Pass Trail, but only for about 45 minutes before you leave the pass and head up to the summit of Buller.

Where to Park:

Park at the Buller Mountain Day Use area by Buller Pond. This is on the west side of the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Lakes Road about 36km south from Canmore and 32km north from the Kananaskis Lakes Trail Junction

The Route (see photo below):

Cross over to the well-marked Buller Pass trailhead on the East side of Spray Lakes Road. Make your way up the easy trail, which soon crosses the first wooden bridge. The trail continues to meander in a large counter-clockwise loop. It takes about 35-45 minutes to get to the second bridge which crosses Buller Creek. This is where you head off the trail. You'll see a rough bushwhacked path just before the bridge and to the left; you'll want to head off in this direction, heading straight up to the col above (see photo below)

Find your way up, but look out for falling rocks in the gullies; a climber died here a few years ago from a rock that tumbled down, loosened by meltwater.

After you reach the col, the route is straightforward to the summit via the obvious scree path winding up to the top.

The summit gives you a great view of Spray Lake, and you can see Mt. Assiniboine in B.C. to the southwest.

Sign the cairn register, and head back the same way.

Thank you for visiting the summit of Mount Buller and keeping it clean.
