Mount Borgeau, Banff Alberta

Elevation: 9614 ft / 2930 m

Degree of Difficulty:

Easy

Time to Complete Round Trip:

7-8 hours

Information:

Borgeau is the peak north of the Sunshine Village ski area. When you're skiing Sunshine, and you take the gondola from the parking area, this is the mountain you'll see with the big waterfall, frequently frozen during winter months.

The attempt on Borgeau is a long hike followed by a long, relatively easy scramble (in terms of exposure). It's kind of a marathon effort, but well worth the trouble.

Where to Park:

Park at the Borgeau day use parking area, a few kilometres west of the turnoff to Sunshine ski area.

The Route (see photo below):

Follow the trail for about seven kilometres until you get to Borgeau Lake. From Borgeau Lake, the route to the summit is a long counterclockwise semicircle. Follow the righthand lake shore and look for the tumbling creek above and to the right; head in that direction. You can find a trail or two that will take up to the top of the rise, and the trail to Harvey Pass. Follow the clear trail which will cross the creek and proceed up. There is a cairn which looks directly over the lake, but this is not the summit. Your goal is high ahead.

Along the way you'll be able to look down on the Sunshine Village ski area.

At the summit is some sort of a weather observation shack. Hide from the wind on whichever side of the shack is suitable (but don't break in!)

A cairn is slightly lower, but I my friend Steve and I couldn't find a cairn register.

Thank you for visiting the summit of Mount Borgeau and keeping it clean.
