Weekly Results

Hey, Mother Nature won again at Sharon after the heat races were completed, Bruce finished 4th in his heat and was looking forward to a good run in the feature when the rains came. We'll try it again next Friday.

Sunday, it was off to Tri City to try it again. The clouds moved out and the show was completed. The track was in nice shape for hot laps, Bruce looked good and no changes were made for the heat race. The track changed dramatically for the heat race, it became very rough at both ends. The cars were really bouncing around in the turns alot. Nothing was learned from the heat, but a 4th place finish wasn't too bad for the conditions. Feature time would find the track turning even rougher. Bruce started 4th, but slowly went backwards being unable to find any where that was smooth to run. The cars looked more like ski boats bouncing over waves than cars racing around the track.Bruce decided he had had enough on the 16th lap. He brought it in while it was still in one piece. A wise move in my opinion. We'll see what the plans are for next weekend and update then.

HISTORY:

Bruce started his racing career at the end of the 1993 season driving a micro-sprint at Hickory Motor Speedway.

1994= This was Bruce's 1st full season in the car. A new paint scheme was in order, and a change to #35. After having numerous top ten finishes, he finished 11th in the final points standing.Considering there were over 60 cars with points in his division, his "rookie" year went well.

1995= This would prove to be our "breakout" year. We started out with a newer chassis this year, updating seemed to pay off. A new paint scheme was brought out with the new car. This would be the car the competition would begin to fear! Along the path to the Hickory Motor Speedway 250cc Championship, Bruce collected 10 Heat race wins, 9 A-Main wins, and 8 top 5 finishes. He also had Heat race wins at Marion Center Speedway, and Path Valley Speedway in Harrisburgh.

1996= Bruce decided to move up to the 271cc division for the new year. He ran the same car with similar results from the previous year. Bruce claimed the Hickory Motor Speedway 271cc Micro Sprint Championship. He also claimed the Blanket Hill Speedway Micro Championship as well. On his way to the crowns, he collected 6 Heat race wins, and 4 A-Main wins at Hickory, along with 3 Heat race wins and 2 A-Main wins at Blanket Hill. He also managed 3 top 5 finishes at the Marion Center Speedway.

It didn't take Bruce long to show up in Victory Lane after moving up.

1997= Bruce was hired to wheel the micro sprint of Fabulous Goldstein's Furniture and Ray Macina ride out of Sharon Pa. The team traveled alot and were successful at the following tracks: Hickory Motor Speedway,Marion Center Speedway, Challenger Speedway, Sportsman Speedway, Freemont Speedway, Mercer Speedway, Sharon Speedway, Deerfield Speedway, and I-35 Raceway.

Bruce compiled a total of 14 Heat race wins at various tracks, plus 4 A-Main Wins at Freemont Speedway, 1 A-Main win at Sportsman Speedway, and 1 A-Main win at Deerfield Speedway. He consistently ran in the top ten at all the tracks he ran. Highlights of the year were winning the Ohio Valley Quarter Mile Championship Race at Deerfield Speedway, along with placing 2nd in points at Hickory, and 10th in points at Sharon.

Here is Bruce and the gang celebrating in victory lane at Sportsman Speedway.

On August 24th, while attending the races at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Bruce was asked to drive a Late Model, in his 1st attempt at a full size race car, he managed a 7th place finish in the B-Main. Another 1st for him was the opportunity to "hot lap" a 360 Sprinter at Hickory, the hook was set, he felt "the need for speed" !

1998= Powell Racing takes another step up, this time when the garage doors open, the car has grown up, its full size now and the motor sits in front of Bruce instead of beside him. Under the hood is a 360 fuel injected "beast". This would be the "rookie" year for Bruce in the full size sprint cars. He decided to run at Tri-City Speedway being it was the closest to home. This would be a new learning process, everything was more complicated due to having alot more adjustments available than on the micros. Highlights of the year were way above expectations, Rookie of the Year- Sprints, finished 5th place in overall point standings, 12 top ten finishes, 7 top fifteen finshes, along with the fact Bruce finished every feature event that he started. Quite the rookie season!

1st year in the big sprints.

1999= Look Out! Bruce rolled the car out of the garage for this year, and low and behold, its sporting an aluminum 410! Well, we're off to Lernerville Speedway for the opener. It proved to be both exciting, and dissapointing. Bruce finished 2nd in his heat between Jamie Smith and Bob Felmlee, very exciting! When Bruce went out for the Feature, the throttle decided to start sticking, wisely, Bruce pulled the car in the pits, very dissapointed. This would be our teams story for the 1st part of the season, alot of ups and downs, it seemed as if the "sophmore" jinx was apon us. Bruce's luck all changed on the weekend of July 4th. We decided to do a 3 race weekend, Lernerville, Sportsman, and Tri-City. We had a slight mishap at Lernerville, rebuilt the front end for Sportsman and headed off. This would be the turning point of the season, coming down the back stretch into turn 3, Bruce drove under Kevin Andrusky, their wheels touched sending Bruce flipping into the guardrail. We looked the car over Sunday morning and discovered that the chassis was severely bent, twisted, and broke. We patched it up enough to run Tri-City, but knew we needed another chassis. One was found, a downtube Gambler, everything we had would bolt up! We were back in business. With the new car, the jinx seemed to be gone, it was like a hole new season.

Highlights for the season were finishing 3rd in points. Bruce had 7 top 5 finishes, and 8 top 10 finishes. His best finish was 2nd.

Another 1st for Bruce was he participated in his 1st ever "wingless" show. We ran in the 1st Annual USAC show at Tri-City Speedway. Never racing a wingless car, Bruce did an exceptional job. He earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars in the Feature. He also was the highest finishing local driver.

In closing, we hope to see you, the fans, this upcoming racing season. We hope to have a very productive season.
