in north central Montana, who has made his home on the neighboring
Rocky Boy Indian Reservation since 1967.
Vernon’s grandfather was “THE BOY”, last of the great chiefs
of the Gros Ventre Tribe and keeper of the sacred Flat Pipe.
THE BOY’S father was LAME BULL, also a Gros Ventre chief and
keeper of the sacred Flat Pipe.
At home he is a prolific painter of portraits of
Indian personalities. He has a large clientele who commission him
to paint portraits of their relatives.
Typical are portraits of Little Bear, legendary Cree Leader in Canada and the United States,
and Young Boy, a Cree friend of Charles M. Russell. Vernon has worked several years
in the Rocky Boy school system as an illustrator of Children’s books. He has also done
extensive artwork designing Christmas cards, posters, and large wall murals.
Vernon The Boy is largely self-taught and does mostly
multi-media and sculptures. Vernon has entered several of his art pieces
in various art competitions throughout Montana.
In 1989 his entry, (one over a hundred entries) was selected for
the Montana Statehood Stamp Cover, to commemorate 100 years of statehood.
The painting “Charles M. Russell and his friends” wass reproduced for the Montana
Statehood Stamp. At the 2002 Chrles M. Russell Art Show and Auction,
in the Native American Art section, Vernon’s pastel entry of Charles M. Russell,
