GOD IN A TEST TUBE

Is there a God? is the question that must be answered by every human being, and the answer is far-reaching in its implications for every individual. Growing up in a Christian family does not make one a unique Christian. I’ve pondered around this question all my life. In order for something to be proven by the scientific method, it must be repeatable. We can say that history in its very nature is nonrepeatable. No one can re-live his life or resurrect an event that has already happened. Can God be proven using this method? Anthropological research has shown that among the people today, there is a universal belief in God. Earlier historians and legends believed, or at least assumed, the concept of one God, one Creator. The writer of Ecclesisastes referred to God as having “set eternity in the hearts of men” (Eccles 3:11). Agustine elaborated on this verse saying, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee.”

We as human beings, and the universe itself, are effects, which must have had a cause. No effect can be produced without a cause. This theory drives us to an uncaused cause, God. Who created God? you might question. God by definition is eternal and uncreated. If God is a created being, then God is no longer himself; the being who created God is God. In other words, if God were a created being, then he would not and could not be God. As one author wrote, “Being eternal, God is not an effect. Since he is not an effect he does not require a cause. He is uncaused!”

If you would carefully exam the universe’s design, you’ll realize the One who cause all this to existence. The earth's distance from the sun is correct—even a small change would make it too hot or too cold. Furthermore, take, for example, the complicity of the human body. In every human cell there are about 200,000 amino acids. If you would compute the time required to get all 200,000 amino acids for one human cell to come together by chance, it would take about 4.6 billion years to complete. That means that we are still test dummies—existing only in a test face. We’re not complete beings! Consider Darwin’s theory on the human eye, “To suppose that the eye, with so many parts all working together could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.”

The Bible describes every existence this way, “In the beginning you (Lord) laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands” (Ps 102:25). One of the greatest theologians, the apostle Paul, wrote, “God has made it plain… For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, bring understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Rom 1:19-20). Whether you believe in God or not, don’t deny the truth around you that God has shown. If we wait to find out the true answer before we can believe, the answer might not come to us in such an obvious way!

Consider this analogy by Hoyle: “What are the chances that a tornado might blow through a junkyard containing all the parts of a 747, accidentally assemble them into a plane, and leave it ready for take-off?” Life cannot have arisen by chance! A question was asked, “Can you fathom the mysteries of God?” (Job 11:7). The answer is no! Unless God reveals himself, we are doomed to confusion. You already know the answer! It’s all around you. God spoke into one final perfect Word; he spoke the Incarnation of Jesus, who is the true answer to our confusions and the gate Keeper to our salvation.
