Story of Joseph Stewart HILES

Joseph Stewart HILES was born in Brown County, Ohio April 13, 1858. He was twenty three years old when he started West by covered wagon train with his parents Henry J. and Elizabeth BENNETT Hiles, five sisters, one brother and another family--the Otis C Eakins family. Otis was married to Henry's daughter Rachel. Henry's parents were Isaiah, born in 1790 and Hester THOMAS Hiles, born in 1794; both born in New Jersey. Hester and Isaiahs children were:

Isaac, Isaiah, Henry and Hester.

On March 23, 1892 Joe married Brunetta Euceba HOWARD born in Jacksonville, Jackson County Oregon January 5, 1875.

The family emigrated to Cowlitz County, Washington from Grass Valley, Oregon by covered wagon sometime between 1906 and 1910. Daughter Nettie Laura, who was born in Moro, Oregon March 31, 1905 was between 18 months and five years old at the time. It is thought that daughter Phearl (pronounced Farel) was born in Kelso, Washington in January of 1908.

The family apparently settled first in Ostrander, WA. About 1912 they moved to Kelso and were there through World War I and the Great Influenza Epidemic.

Nettie told of riding horseback and herding cows through the brush and swamps where Longview stands today; and of finding Indian beads and arrow heads in the area.

About 1919 they moved to Silver Lake, WA and from there to Castle Rock, WA in the fall of 1920. In Castle Rock they bought property on Buland Drive, next to Silas Burt's farm.

Elias and Marian lived in the Soap Lake, WA area.

Several of Brunetta Howard Hiles brothers and sisters (16 or 17) also came to live in Cowlitz County but little is known of their history. The family deserves mention here, however, because they were also among the pioneers of the Kelso area of Washington and many of their descendents still reside in the area
