For those wishing to print this page in black text with no graphics, click HERE.
The first thing to do, is open another browser window [that is, have another Internet Explorer or Netscape window open] and type in the address of the FamilySearch page, which is as follows:
http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchigi.asp
By doing so, you can then keep coming back to this instructional page as you work on the Family Search site. You can change from one window to the other by clicking on the one you want, down the bottom of the page in your Task Bar.
[It would be a good idea to bookmark the Family Search site at this stage, because you are likely to come back to it often!]
Now, here we go...the search begins!
[Here we are searching for Samuel Asher from Nottingham England, British Isles, born about 1812. ]
Insert your search details FIRST NAME and then LAST NAME
[At this stage I prefer not to add parents' names]
Go to EVENT box....select marriage, baptism, birth, etc., or leave it set to ALL if that is what you want.
Go to REGION and set to British Isles
Go to COUNTRY and select England
Go to COUNTY and select Nottingham
Go to YEAR and insert 1812
Because we are not sure of the year, do the following:
Go to YEAR RANGE and select [ + or - 10 years]
Disregard the other boxes for batch, serial, etc., they are for a more detailed search when you have results from a previous search. More of that later!
Click on SEARCH
Here is a copy of the result:
1. Samuel Lyon ASHER - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Christening: 22 Jan 1818 Saint Mary, Nottingham, Nottingham, England
Now, because Samuel Lyon Asher is a hyperlink to more information, when we click on Samuel Lyon Asher, we get the following details:
Samuel Lyon ASHER
Sex: M
Event(s):
Christening: 22 Jan 1818
Saint Mary, Nottingham, Nottingham, England
Parents:
Father: William ASHER
Mother: Elizabeth
Now, having found Samuel Asher, we might like to know if he had any brothers and sisters. Here is how to check it out!
Go back to your original search box: if your previous data is still there, then click on CLEAR.
In the PARENT box, enter William Asher and then Elizabeth.
IN the EVENT box, select BIRTH/CHRISTENING
In REGION select BRITISH ISLES then once again, ENGLAND and NOTTINGHAM as before.
This gives us a result of eight children, baptised to William and Elizabeth Asher in the Nottingham region. A quick check of a parish map would show us that Arnold is an ajoining parish to Nottingham St Mary where Samuel was baptised.
HINT for researchers...this would be a good place to use your PARISH LOCATOR PROGRAM [otherwise called PARLOC for short] which is available for free download HERE. Parish Locator will tell you what the adjoining parishes were and how far apart they were.
