"Are you ready?" Damien asked in his usual deep voice.
Angelica nodded, her nervousness showing in her jungle-green eyes. "Y-yeah…"
Damien turned and looked into her eyes. "Angie, are you sure you want to go through with this?"
Angelica didn't even need to think about it. Her memories of earlier that day were enough of an answer. "Yes, I'm positive." She smiled at him. "It's the only way we will ever be able to be together."
Damien took her hand and held it tightly for a minute. "I love you, Angie, remember that always."
Angelica looked deeply into his eyes. "I will, if you remember that I love you also."
Damien smiled and climbed out of the car. Angelica got out of her side and walked to the front of the car. Damien met her there and kissed her lovingly.
"This is it."
Angelica nodded and looked around. The fireflies were flying around her, lighting up when they flew closer to her. She smiled. Then she looked up at the moon. It seemed to glow brighter, as if trying to tell her something. 'Don't…' she could barely hear the soft whisper and even then she didn't know where it came from.
She looked down, if she kept having these thoughts, she would back out and Damien would be angry at her. She couldn't have that. He was the only person that actually cared about her feelings. She would do anything he wanted her to.
"Angie, it's time." Damien said.
Angelica looked at him. For as long she could remember he'd called her Angie. No one else ever called her that. She was always Angelica to them. She nodded and ran her fingers through her long, golden curls and allowed Damien to squeeze her hand gently.
"Good bye for now, my love." Damien said softly.
"See you in Heaven, Damien." Angelica said.
Damien took a step forward and Angelica could feel the edge of the cliff. The air grew colder and the wind picked up. It was such a long fall, even in broad daylight when one looked down, all they saw was black. She refused to be scared. Damien wasn't so why should she be scared? She had to be brave, if only for him. There was no backing out now.
Besides, even if she screamed, no one would hear her. They were too far away from civilization to be heard. The only house nearby was pitch black so Angelica assumed that the owner was sleeping. Plus, it was a mile or two away.
This was it. She closed her eyes and felt Damien jump forward, clutching her hand tightly. Then she no longer felt the ground beneath her and for an instant it was as if she could fly. The cool wind caressed her hair and her face. Then she felt herself start to fall. Terror rushed through her, second thoughts. 'No!' she told herself, 'Don't start with those! Now you and Damien will be together forever with no one to stop you.'
The fall seemed to take forever. Angelica finally opened her eyes and looked down. The ground was rushing towards her. She looked at Damien and saw tears on his face, his dark blue eyes squeezed shut tightly. Angelica closed her eyes and forced her mouth to stay shut, swallowing the scream that tried desperately to emerge.
Then, in one single instant, she stopped moving downward. Pain exploded in every part of her body and she clutched Damien's hand tightly, as not to let go. For one single moment, the pain left and she was able to open her eyes. She looked at Damien's crushed face and knew he was dead. His head was split open, a single line of blood making it's way down his cheek. She couldn't sit up or even move one hand to wipe it away. All she could do was close her eyes again.
Blackness came towards her, but still no pain. She looked at the blackness, wondering where the bright light that her priest talked about so frequently was. All she saw was the blackest black she had ever seen. It scared her. And yet, all she could do was reach out and embrace it.
