Copyright Issues

  • Copyright materials sent over the Internet or stored on web pages are treated in the same manner as other media

  • Availability of resources, serCopyright laws established to protect the author/creator's intellectural property (IP)
    • IP includes written work, photographs, illustrations, music and videos

  • In some countries, people have the right to be compensated for their creative work.

  • Offers Copyright owners have the exclusive rights to copy, distribute and transmit their intellectural property.
    • They can grant permission to others to use the work and works as "licensed".

  • Licensing gives the right ot copy and distribute within the stipulated guidelines.

  • Downloading of materials from the Internet is a copyright infringement unless it is for fair dealing.

  • Fair dealing is when a fair and reasonable portion (10% of the electronic bytes of work) of the work is copied for:
    • research or private study
    • critisim or review
    • reporting current events
    • judicial proceedings
    • professional advice

  • Browsing, hyper-linking

  • Protection of source code

  • Copyright does not last forever
    • Exceptions are those in the public domain and copyright-free clip arts
