Evaluation Criteria

  • Accessibility
    • Can the speed of access be determined?
    • Does it require special software to view the full version?
    • Does it provide option for “text” version only?
    • Does it require registration and log-ins?
    • Is all information provided free?

Many people use the Internet because it is convenient, faster, easier and most of the time is free.

The speed of access are dependent on many factors that include the number and size of the images, the existence of mirror sites, the availability of a text version, the modes of access and whether you need other software or hardware in order to view the full version. When such additional requirements are needed, the source of information should make them available easily for the users. Links should be provided for users to download the required software or hardware.

The language of the source may also be different. Thus, that may hinder to be a problem. Restrictions can also occur through registration and logging in. Methods to counter this can be book marking the site and using cookies to store usernames and passwords.

Other factors are the cost. It determines how much information is freely available. The user should also consider the value and usefulness of the free information against the original. Copyright ownership details should also be checked out for matters like citation of materials and the contacts for copyright permission. Also, check up on when the site is usually not available and its stability. That would determine the reliability of access to the site.
