- Relevance ranking
- Relevance is high if the search terms appears
- Title of the page
- Near the top of the page
- Frequently in the text
Relevance ranking looks at the number of times your search term appears in the document, in a ratio with some overall measurement of the document, like length of number of words. The significance of your term in the retrieved text is estimated and the hits are given rank or scores that determine the order they are displayed.
- Truncation and Stemming
- e.g. computer computers, computerization, etc.
- Similar pages
Google for example, has a link to similar pages. Here, the search engines will automatically look for web pages that are related to the result.
When we do a search, the search engine returns a list of results that will include the name of the page, the URL and short description from the page containing your keywords. Some search engines will display next to each site the relevance
ranking.
Similarly, different search engines have different options
to assist searching.
