The capital of Russia is located on the Moskva river. The city of over 11.2 million people is growing all the time and encompasses 878.7 kilometers (from 2004 information). Located in the Central Russia federal district, it was the former capital of the Soviet Union. Also it was t he pre-Imperial capital of Muscovite Russia. Today, it stands as the current capital for the Russian Federation (Russia's full name). Located in the west of Russia, the city holds the Kremlin, home of the national government. Also known for Saint Basil's Cathedral, a church with elegant "onion" domes seen on many famous pictures, the patriarch there is the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
