12) Gosford Park

Original Review

This movie makes my list for being the most intelligent film of the year. Directed by veteran director Robert Altman, known for his use of huge ensemble casts, this film involves a large group of wealthy British folks who take a weekend retreat to a mansion a bring along their paid servants. The rich folks live in the beautiful, upper floors of the mansion while the servants live in the run-down sub-floors of the house. There are over 30 characters in this sweeping drama/comedy and we meet and get to know each one of them. Altman tells the story in such a fashion that we don’t ever get confused with all the characters; some of them are very simple characters and some are deep, complex characters but they all play a part in the story. The dialogue is very smart, funny, and witty as only those Brits can pull off and the interactions between the many different characters is a lot of fun to watch. The majority of the story involves the mystery that ensues when one of the millionaires is killed and a detective arrives to attempt to solve the mystery. The murder is set up so that no one in the house is above suspicion because they all have an opportunity and a motive. This movie may sound like a drama or a thriller but is actually terrifically funny and makes my list as one of the funniest and all around best movies of the year.
