I’ve been very critical of gross and immature comedy in my past reviews but I should make one point understood. While gross comedies are certainly not to be considered in the same league as other films, there is a place for them. After all, what would high school and college guys watch when there’s nothing else to do? Seriously though, there is a certain talent required to make a comedy outrageous enough to startle the viewers but not so bad that they become physically ill. Saving Silverman pulls this off relatively well. The story involves three long-time buddies, played by Jason Biggs, Jack Black, and Steve Zahn, who play together in a Neil Diamond tribute band. Sadly, the band is broken up when Biggs starts to date a controlling maniac played by Amanda Peet. The rest of the movie involves the other two guys trying to wrestle their friend back the psychotic Peet through outrageous schemes that are doomed to fail before they begin. The movie’s only laughs come from Black and Zahn’s crazy antics and off-topic conversations. Jack Black is the funniest guy in almost every movie he’s made and he saves this movie from being a total disaster. If you’re in the mood for a purely stupid comedy and you don’t feel like paying attention to the plot, because this one makes no sense whatsoever, then go for Saving Silverman. On the other hand, if you are looking for a movie with intelligence of any kind at all, leave this one alone. But what do you expect from a movie whose main actor is known for having sex with a pie.
