Heartbreakers

I entered the year, as I said, with high expectations but I hadn’t heard much buzz on this movie at the time of release. It was touted as a romantic comedy with more comedy than romance. Of course the only thing I could have told you about it at the time was that it starred Jennifer Love Hewitt. Anyway, it was enough to get me and probably several more guys across the country into the theater. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. The story involves a mother and daughter, played by Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver, who roam around the country making their living by conning unsuspecting men into marrying the mother and then cheating with the daughter, resulting in a divorce, which of course gives the mother a hefty settlement. The early scenes of the movie are a little slow but when the team meets up with an aging millionaire (played rather disgustingly by Gene Hackman) the comedy begins to roll in. The romantic story line involves Hewitt’s character falling in love with one of her con victims and the resulting emotional conflict. The comedy, although a little gross and juvenile, is a pretty good laugh and the characters are very likable and well cast. My friend Amy, who saw it with me, enjoyed it a little more than I did, probably because of the romantic factor, but nonetheless I did enjoy it.
