JFMF CULTURAL EDUCATION DVD #1: TAIKO DRUMMING LESSON AND TEACHER INSERVICE CONDENSED
Moko Igarashi, Taiko Drum Instructor and Clinician
Contents:
• Moko Igarashi leads a class of students, ages 6-18 (plus two parents), at the American Embassy School in Tokyo as they perform a song entitled, Running Horse.
• The same class rearranges the drums and plays another selection, entitled Dragon vs. Tiger.
• Two high school students, two parents, and the instructor perform a much more difficult selection, Drum Machine, which was written specifically for this particular ensemble.
• Students from Ms. Igarashi’s class and some of the American teachers receive a lesson on the taiko drum selection: Storm Mountain. (Excerpts of the lesson are included. The unabridged footage is found in the JFMF Cultural Education DVD #2: Taiko Drumming Lesson and Teacher In-service #1.)
• The instructor and two students perform Storm Mountain for the camera, with the purpose of it being used to teach a class how to play the piece themselves.
• A parent explains the titles of the selections in Japanese.

• This DVD contains the unabridged footage of the lesson given by Moko Igarashi at the American Embassy School in Tokyo on Saturday, November 20, 2004.
• All lessons and Taiko drum selections which involve the Embassy School students are included.
• Descriptions of drums, setting up procedures, and introductions of students and parents are also included.
• Transitional time is left uncut in order to show a comprehensive example of a music lesson taught by a Japanese teacher.

• Mr. Kenny performs a Kyogen monologue entitled, The Sightseer, in English, and in costume (10 min.)
• Lecture on the different types of traditional Japanese theatre, including puppet theatre, followed by a narrowing of the focus to Kyogen, including information about the masks and the specific plays in which they are used.
