Yalobusha

The Yalobusha runs behind my house
on her steady path to the big Yazoo
She's been with me long as I recall
Only woman that ever stayed true
Rebekah cheated after three months wed
and five hard years together
We couldn't get along for a day
Much less go on lovin' forever
Oh, I've got secrets only her and that river know
She always talked about leavin' so I let her go
She pushed me to my outer limits
Kept my body tired and anger high
When we weren't makin' love we were fightin'
That ain't no way to keep a love alive
I used to come home late and find her gone
And I'd go out and think by the river
She'd come home and swear we were over
I swore I would never forgive her
and I've got secrets only her and that river know
She always talked about leavin' so I let her go
I've done some things that I regret
Some I keep between me and the Lord
The Yalobusha was fighting her banks
the night Rebekah walked out that door
In the roar of that rising river
We said our goodbyes on the shore
She didn't even bother to pack her bags
but she ain't comin' back here no more
and I've got secrets only her and that river know
She always talked about leavin' so I let her go
She's might be as far as Greenwood by now
but I pray she's made it further down
Hope she ain't run into any snags
or come to rest on solid ground
If the sheriff comes to ask about her
I'll just shrug my shoulders and say
She always said she'd drown in tears
And she was cryin' the night she went away
and I've got secrets only her and that river know
She always talked about leavin' so I let her go
The Yalobusha runs behind my house
on her steady path to the big Yazoo
She's been with me long as I recall
Only woman that ever stayed true
