The CMHEA was first organized in the fall of 1993, when the Campbell’s and Belknap’s decided to meet at the base park. A week or so later two more families joined them. Within a month, by word of mouth, approximately 50 families had called and asked to come. From a simple desire to spend time together came a group that formed into CMHEA. Begun as an informal support network of active duty, retired and reserve military families, CMHEA has grown into a structured, organized association designed to serve the military home educators of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. CMHEA continues to grow with each passing year. The growing need and concern for a better education has brought many parents to our group.
We are a Christian organization that is special in the fact that members must be affiliated with the military in some manner. CMHEA is designed for active duty, reserve, national guard or retired military families.
BENEFITS OF JOINING CMHEA
By joining CMHEA you are joining a group that cares about the education of their children. You will receive support from other parents who home educate. This gives you an opportunity to share ideas, advice and guidance from other home educators.
CMHEA meets the second Tuesday of the month (Sept-May) at the Triangle Chapel Annex at 7pm located on Keelser Air Force Base. You are welcome and encouraged to come for a "Teacher's Night Out." This is a great way to gain insight and helpful information that may help you decide if home education is right for your family. Meetings begin with a prayer, new agenda.
CMHEA organizes weekly activities. Listed below is an example of the activities and frequency:
Book It: Reading program
Bowling Day: once a month
Crafts and Caroling
Field Trips: we try for once a month or more.
Park Day: once a month
Physical Education: every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month
Presidential Physical Fitness Award Program
Roller skating: once a month
And much more….
Yearly membership fees: $20.00 to include a hard copy of the monthly newsletter, $15.00 to include a copy of the monthly newsletter via email. These fees enable the group to purchase supplies, awards, make reservations for facilities and to cover the cost of printing out handouts.
If you are considering home education we encourage you to attend one of our meetings or to contact our communications coordinator. If she cannot answer your questions she will get you in touch with someone who can. This is an opportunity to make one of the most important decisions of your child’s life. If you are already home educating this will give you an opportunity to join others with similar interests, to share ideas, activities and support. Education is the key to success. Join us on our journey to educate.
