1st and 2nd Grade Expectations
SECOND GRADE EXPECTATIONS
As your child ENTERS 2nd grade and/or EXITS 1st grade he/she should be able to do the following:
- Recognize short and long vowels
- Master basic 220 Dolch sight words
- Read and comprehend guided reading level I books
- Correctly use the basic sentence structure (naming and telling part)
- Write a basic story (stay on one topic... stage 3 of writing rubric)
- Spell phonetically (long and short vowels, blends, digraphs)
- Alphabetize words to the 2nd letter
- Follow oral and written directions
- Compute basic addition and subtraction problems to 18
- Use a number line correctly (addition and subtraction up to 100)
- Compute basic addition and subtraction word problems 1 and 2 digit numbers without regrouping
- Use counting on and counting back strategies when computing facts
- Recognize basic time to the hour and half hour
- Recognize and be able to count coins
- Identify place value (ones and tens)
- Write and identify numbers to 100
- Recognize odd and even numbers
- Obtain and use information from graphs
- Write legibly
- Identify the correct sequences in the writing process
As your child EXITS 2nd grade he/she should be able to do the following:
- Answer questions with a complete sentence
- Write a basic story... stage 4 of the writing rubric
- Identify and use parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, conjunction)
- Know and be able to write address and phone number correctly
- Alphabetize words to the 3rd letter
- Identify and use correct punctuation and capitalization consistently
- Use correct grammar (suffixes and subject/verb agreement)
- Copy from board correctly
- Read fluently and comprehend guided reading level L/M books
- Use self correcting strategies effectively
- Recall and identify main idea and details within a story
- Use reference skills and map skills
- Follow multiple oral/written directions
- Compute three digit addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping
- Use multiple combinations of money/coins when counting up to one dollar and making change
- Tell time to 5 minute intervals
- Read, interpret, and apply information from graphs and charts
- Solve story problems independently
- Use basic measurement and geometry
- Identify 3 digit place value (ones, tens, hundreds)
- Find/solve missing addends
- Recognize number patterns
- Skip count by 2's, 5's, 10's up to 100; 3's up to 30; 4's up to 40
- Identify and use the writing process correctly
As your child ENTERS 1st grade he/she should be able to:
- Know upper/lower case letters
- Know beginning sounds
- Know numbers 0 to 20 (written and oral)
- Know color words
- Know number words to ten
- Know 50 sight words
- Understand left to right with writing, reading, and math
- Understand how to use handwriting paper
- Recognize and arrange pictures in sequence
- Recognize shapes, patterns, and coins
- Begin recognizing coin values up to 25 cents
- Recognize ordinal numbers 1st through 5th
- Demonstrate the ability to understand simple addition and subtraction concepts
- Write letters in random order
- Form letters correctly
- Write a complete sentence.
