Memphis, TN

This clearly shows how Memphis can't sign streets! Knowing the avenues and the streets is essential to navigating Memphis because avenues run E-W and streets run N-S, but 3/4 of the street-name signs don't have them marked. Sometimes, they don't even have street-name signs up at ALL. I was on one street where I didn't see any street-name signs for about 4 blocks. Come on, this is the 18th largest city in the US! Surely they can afford to put street-name signs on every corner! Or can they? (7/00)

Why did I put this picture here? Two reasons. First of all, it's Tennessee's secondary highway marker. It looks a lot like Mississippi's old marker. Second of all, it runs E-W and it's odd numbered (very weird to a guy who lives in a state where all odd-numbered routes are signed N-S, even the ones going directly E-W). (7/00)

Street-name signs with gold letters on a black background are relatively rare, altho according to Leon Bracey they are used in a Jackson suburb (I think it was Madison, since I didn't go thru there on my 1999 trip to Jackson). This sign is just weird. (6/1/01)

This is a strange Tennessee phenomenon. Usually you see cutouts without the state name (such as the Greenwood, MS cutouts). In this case, you get state name shields on square blanks (the top line says TENN-US). Not a great shot, but at least I got it. (6/1/01)
