US78 in Mississippi

West Of Tupelo & Lee County
In Tupelo & Lee County

West Of Tupelo:

Big voice: "ENTER DESOTO COUNTY ~!" Small voice: "No! I refuse to! You can't make me!" (6/1/01)

This is a newly installed sign on US78 eastbound. (6/1/01)

The resigning project includes the installation of these giant markers. (6/1/01)

This is a newly installed sign on US78 westbound. MS2 and MS5 end at Hickory Flat, but they don't come out to US78. On the off-ramp MS178 is mistakenly signed N-S, but I was unable to get a photo. (6/1/01)

In New Albany, the median gets really narrow and (I think) contains a Jersey barrier. This is the most substandard section of the freeway, but it was also the first portion built. Despite its small size, New Albany serves as a secondary shopping center for Pontotoc residents (like me) who don't want to deal with Tupelo traffic. (Translated: It has a Wal-Mart Supercenter.) (6/1/01)

AAA! Exit 76! What an evil number! The preferred route from Oxford to Tupelo (and from Tupelo to Oxford) is MS-6, MS-76, MS-9, and US-78. MS-76 and US-78 are always being mixed up, and this exit will only make things worse. (2001)

Tupelo/Lee County:

The first FHWA-compliant sign I spotted in Tupelo itself. (9/01)

These are the old overheads at the 45/78 cloverleaf in Tupelo. (9/01)

These are the new overheads at the same interchange as above. (2001)

This is one of the older signs on US-78 in Tupelo. (12/2/00)

This sign replaced the above sign. (9/2001)

Old and new signage for the Auburn Road exit. Stupidly enough, Auburn Road is actually called County Road 931 until the Tupelo city limits, where it turns into Eason Blvd. until MS145/Gloster St., where it turns into Cliff Gookin Blvd. until MS6/Main St., where it turns into Coley Road. By the way, that is a coin in the photo. (7/21/01)

Don't forget to check Chris Lawrence's US78 photos as well.
