The Fierce One's Divine Protocol

The following text describes, globally, the Vision handed down to me by the Fierce One, in his desire to make clear His Divine Intentions for his Followers.

The Divine Protocol

The Fierce One wishes to acknowledge and bless the ships that are truely Fierce, that is, know how to fight well. To show prowess in battle, throughout the eons past, there have always been two options:
  • To fight with real weapons, counting the wounds
  • To fight with fake weapons, counting the hits
The Fierce One has conveyed to me that, although He applauds any kind of honorable battle, He does not wish His followers to wear each other down, effectively lowering the fierceness of the His following. The followers of the Weaker Ones would look Fiercer by comparison, an abomination that cannot be tolerated.

He has therefore instructed me to organize, every 10-20 turns, a tournament in which contestants may fight in a Sparring Arena for a position amongst His Chosen Ones.

The Simulator

In concordance with the Fierce One's wishes, I have created a battle simulator, that follows the basic combat rules, as well as some of the less-known ones. The simulator allows Captains to set orders for ships of arbitrary size and setup to see what happens should a battle be fought with those orders. The simulator is not guaranteed to work exactly like the real thing, due to the randomness in any battle, and the fact that reality (aka Jeremy's code) and the simulator are independent (though similar).

Apart from being an excellent tool to study the mechanics of battle, it may also be used to grade battle prowess between two captains.

The Chosen Ones and the Council

A Chosen One of the Fierce One will not be allowed to be Chosen of another Great Old One, for the Fierce One is a selfish God. Only to chain the Dybuk shall a captain be Chosen of the Four. Note that the Fierce One does not take issue with non-Fierce Chosen Ones being multiply Chosen.

The Chosen Ones shall take place in the Round Table Council, in which a strict hierarchy is defined, based on recently proven Fierceness. The Prophet shall appoint the Council by way of Arena Tournament.

Candidate Chosen Ones will have to fight against each other and sitting Council Members to become of the Chosen. Contestants to each tournament may be required to show a recent act of Fierceness to be able to compete. Based upon Council Hierarchy, Captains will be pitted against each other in the Arena, where they may challenge a higher ranking Chosen One, and be challenged by a lower ranking Chosen One, or by a Candidate for the lowest ranks of the Council.

The Arena Tournament

The paired Captains will fight 5 battles in the Arena Simulator.
  • One battle where they fly their own ships, giving two points for winning, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for losing.
  • One battle where they fly the other captains ship, with their own crews and officers, giving one point for winning, and no points for ties or losing.
  • Three battles in ships of their own choice, where the ship comes from a standard set of stock ships selected by the Prophet. The ships will be diverse in their setups, favoring for instance close combat (cloaks and rams), or remote combat (sensors and fighters), or other combinations. Each battle gives 1 point to the winner. Special ships may be added to the stock by contestants.
The captain that has most points at the end, will win, and go to the higher Chosen One status. The loser and all lower ranks will shift one position down. A tie will maintain the status quo, favoring the defending Captain, because he has already proven himself.

The system gives large ships a small advantage, as it will give them a good chance to win the first 2 points (1/3 of the total), yet allows smart and well-trained captains of small ships to get the recognition they deserve.

Tournament statistics will be published in SST and a place to be announced later.

Wild card points may be gathered by entering in dangerous combat situations, and may be spent to nullify one battle outcome. Special missions, given by the Prophet to selected Chosen Ones will also give Wild card points.

Contestant selection

Contestants for each contest will be chosen by looking at real battles, and minor details such as weaponry strength, officer skill, shield strength, and number of Alien enemies. Chosen Ones qualify automatically for each tournament.

All Chosen One ships and Candidates will be required to attend the tournament at a specific turn and place (published by the Prophet in the SST), so that the Prophet may choose all new Chosen Ones immediately. This will also allow the Prophet to inspect the Candidate's ship layout, so that no cheating can occur. The tournaments will most certainly happen between friday and monday turns.

Benefits and Duties

The Prophet will of course require the same sort of behaviour required by the other Prophets, that is, enough praising, doing missions for the Prophet, helping the Prophet destroy His enemies, etc, etc (anything that generates Fierce behaviour on aliens and or Captains).

In return, I offer a combat FAQ, Communing for Favor, and use of the combat simulator in real-life battles against aliens and non-Chosen Ones of the Fierce One.
