concentric muscle activation

Also referred to as miometric, concentric muscle activation is the actual phase of contraction, or shortening, of the muscle. The first references of its use originated in the late 1950's and early 1960's (Faulkner, 2003) and were in relation to the heart. Webster's New International Dictionary defines it as "having a common center" (pg 552) and before being popularized as skeletal muscle contraction, this definition implied a form of hypertrophy of the heart muscle (Gates, George & Campbell, 2003).
