Shown in the graph above as the average of 10 repetitions performed on a bench press and 8 repetitions performed on cable crossovers, the two action potential curves are significantly different. The peak of the EMG occurs very early in the concentric phase of the bench press for both upper and lower chest, and very late in the concentric phase for upper and lower chest during the cable crossover.

Compared to the EMG reading of the cable crossover, the bench press produced less muscle activation in the lower chest, and greater muscle activation in the upper chest. The most significant reading however, was the level of activation in the lower chest of the cable crossover.
