Editor's Note: This decree suggests that a census of the Jews of Bessarabia was conducted in 1848 and 1849, and then another begun in 1853. The "us" appears to be the Governing Senate. Censuses were conducted by the Provincial Treasury.
On carrying out a new census of the Jews of Bessarabia.
The Interior Minister, the past June 2nd, communicated to us that the Emperor, from the
the legal position of the Committee of Ministers, in concordance with the entreaty from the Caucasus Governor-General
and the Governor-Generals of New Russia and Bessarabia was imperially pleased
with the carrying out of a new census for the Jews of Bessarabia.
On such, imperially ordered, the Governing Senate had the honour to be informed, together with the duty to add,
that he instructed the Bessarabia Provincial Treasury to begin immediately, based in all aspects on procedures,
in order to put into effect the imperial will, identical to the manner in which
the census of Bessarabia Jews was carried out in 1848 and in 1849.
