Regional Dev.Commr.(Iron & Steel)

Calcutta

Office Information

Regional Dev.Commissioner for Iron & Steel is a sub-ordinate field office of the Development Commissioner for Iron & Steel under Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India. The jurisdiction of the Calcutta Regional office comprises of the following states of Eastern India :

The Eastern Region of India earlier used to hold a unique position in the overall industrial map of the country. The Iron & Steel industry, in fact, originated in this region. The two pre-independence steel plants viz. TISCO and IIsco are located in this region. This region has rich mineral deposits than compared to the rest of the country. However, with the passage of time the situation has changed and the region have failed to keep pace with the hub of activity that has been taking place in the rest of the country particularly in the post-liberalisation era. Exception, however, is the state of Orissa where major plants in the Iron & Steel sector are coming up. The state of West Bengal also does not lag far behind. However, this can not be said so for the other states of the region.

Functions::

With the above backdrop of industrial scenario the Regional Office, Calcutta tries to function as an interface between the industries/consumers on the one hand and the DCI&S and the Min. of Steel on the other. Truly, as a field office endeavour is made to collect as much information as possible from the field and create a database for further exploration by the concerned people. In the deregulation regime the development functions as well as regular updating of information in respect of Iron & Steel industry has become very much important. The Iron & Steel is no longer a scarce commodity and as such there is no problem in the availability. The nature of consumer/industry grievance has therefore changed. The industry rather the industry segments need support in other areas. Our endeavour therefore is to provide as much information as possible to DCI&S so as to facilitate effective policy decisions reg. industry.
