From Streisand: Her Life by James Spada: "Barbra originally considered Kate Nelligan to play Sallie, but after she spoke to the forty-year-old Canadian-born actress she changed her mind. She found Nelligan so beautiful and charismatic she immediately saw her as the young Lila Wingo. After Nelligan's reading, Barbra changed her mind again: now she wanted Nelligan to play both the young and the older Lila in the kind of tour-de-force acting challenge Nelligan loved. 'She's the only one who could pull it off, really,' Barbra said with admiration."

From Her Name is Barbra by Randall Riese:  "Nelligan perceived Lila not as a villain in the Mommie Dearest mold but, rather, as a troubled woman who believed that her life was destined for greater things than it was dealt. 'Don't call Lila a bitch,' she would later warn those who were quick to judge. She regarded her as 'beautiful--human, flawed, and gallant.' If Nelligan was a little sensitive on the subject, it might be because she modeled the character not only on Pat Conroy's mother but on her own as well, an alcoholic who passed away in 1974."

You've done a lot to piss me off"
