Twenty students from various different backgrounds are assigned to
California State University at Los
Angeles. These students will engage in engineering related research
at three nearby industrial sites. The SHARP
PLUS Program at CSLA is the only one of the 12 universities hosting the
program that has 100% of its apprentices stationed
at off-campus industrial worksites. These are:

During their eight-week SHARP PLUS research experiences, apprentices work with mathematics, science, and engineering (MSE) professionals and engage in "hands-on" research. Basically, the students spend approximately 80% of their time on their research-based projects, the remaining time is to be spent in campus related activities (lectures, demonstrations, workshops, tours, enrichment activities, etc.).
The students live on campus during the entire eight week period. Unlike other sites, CSLA participants are housed in 4-bedroom apartments with kitchen, dining room, living room, etc. Students are given allowances for weekly grocery and cook meals for themselves. This helps to provide a "real life" atmosphere for SHARP PLUS apprentices that cannot be achieved when simply living in college dorms.
