AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT:
Post-LFN, I've decided to add a little something that features one of my own personal favorite bands -- U2. They've always have had something to say and it's especially relevant now. Do yourself a favor and get Elevated this year!

REGARDING THE NIKITA MUSIC...

There has been some great music -- source and original -- used to perfection in La Femme Nikita and it's served by some wonderful, helpful sites, which we highly recommend you bookmark and visit often -- Sounds of La Femme Nikita, LFN_MUSIC and the newer, in-depth, and très fabuleux Music Mission page by the knowledgeable and respected CJC Carol at Roy's Farmhouse. There is a music discussion list, also called LFN_Music, owned by Seabush, which you can join by going HERE and signing up. It's excellent for passionate discussion.

I've noticed the same music questions seemed to be raised over and over, so I created my own Q & A and Links page to complement that site and its mailing list, and the other sites with my Buying Guide, which provides easy access (and great prices!) by hot links to places where you can buy the sometimes hard-to-find LFN music. The Band Sites page links to sites specifically requested by fans for Vibrolux, Clove, Mandalay, Kat Rocket, Rhea's Obsession, and many many others.

WHY I LOVE THE MUSIC AND BY THE WAY, WHERE DID IT GO?
(a rave and a rant by nance)

This series used to stand apart from -- and above all others in its inventive and daring use of source music, yet I noticed the music beginning to fade in importance in Season 2. The horrifying dwindling continued throughout Season 3 into Season 4. Now, except for rare, notably brilliant exceptions -- Time To Be Heroes -- it seems to have become almost non-existent. Once in a while an ep (Time To Be Heroes) comes along that stirs that hope again, then a week later, we're tortured by a "dry" episode that has the appearance and sound of having been put together by committee of Martian people. (Who have never seen any previous episode, much less the premiere, classic Nikita season...) While we do slobberingly adore and grovelingly appreciate the themes created by Sean Callery (and we insisted on that original themes album), we think the show has suffered since cutting back on the offbeat, obscure, and indie bands which used to fill the soundtrack. (but go look at Time To Be Heroes for impeccable, evocative source music in a cute, stylized, un-heavy episode. C'est magnifique!) Many us hoped La Femme Nikita would recreate that synergy again, but sadly, the dreaded day is here. The last mission is on the panel. But we applaud the artistry they performed, with those carefully-selected, provocative tunes. The impact of the show was multiplied, underscored (so to speak), and illuminated by the clever use of source music interspersed with original themes. (and the impact diluted without it) We will always have on tape such memorable, musically-lush episodes as:

Love -- who can forget that powerful tag as Nikita's frustration reaches its climax?

Charity -- Michael confronting Alec -- made all the more threatening, yet also humorous, by perfectly-chosen source music

Escape -- can anyone ever get over the seduction, when we were all as mesmerized as Nikita was?

Simone -- the stylized scene of Michael and Nikita -- tall, powerful, striking -- striding coolly in step to a retro-arcade, against a stark blue sky, is probably the one scene that crystallizes the feeling, the statement, the essence of what I thought this show was trying to present to its audience.

but, almost the all-time most popular/memorable scene among the widest array of viewers, the one that first grabbed my eye and ear and made me and many others call ourselves fans was the brilliant teaser of

Rescue -- that scene of a frenzied, doomed firefight, with its attendant panic, its horror -- a silent scream, juxtaposed with the softly undulating rhythmn and mournful wail of Enigma's Beyond the Invisible. That scene's impact cannot be denied. It was so compelling, I couldn't turn away from it, and I am hard to impress, just never had been a regular viewer of any TV series, but that teaser with its contrasting elements locked me in as a fan, instantly.
La Femme Nikita evolved, as any good program should, but still needed those kinds of scenes to keep it fresh and unique. It began as a sparkling diamond amid the dreck of same-same-same television fare. It's not X-Files, it's not Twilight Zone, it's not an Obsession commercial ca. 1988. It was a rare and beautiful gem that lost its polish, humor, and the massive impact & power afforded by a clever backing track. And it lost its lease on life. Today, May 6, 2000, we are grateful for some extraordinary television, and bid goodbye to production. We knew it was coming, but we reel with shock anyway, and shed a tear...

QUESTIONS FROM THE FOLKS...

TRIVIA
On the La Femme Nikita soundtrack cd released in 1998, the Vibrolux song on the track list is incorrectly labeled as "Drown" (from the episode Choice ) when the song on the cd was actually another Vibrolux song,"Ground". Apparently, according to Sara, a fan, in subsequent issuances of the cd, this error has been labeled to reflect the correct song.

Vibrolux , with their song "Mind", and Holly Cole Trio, with "Neon Blue" have also contributed to the dueSouth soundtracks.

In addition to their two contributions to Nikita - "Cun Lacoudhir" in episode Escape , and "Death By Moonlight" in episodes Choice and Hand to Hand , Canadian band Rhea's Obsession has also contributed a song, "Anxia" to the tv series Psi Factor.
