Who is Elastica?: Well, I think it's best to start with who they were(Oh, I'm taking all of this stuff from memory so please forgive any mistakes I make). Elastica was and still is a band based out of Britan. It was started by Justine Frischmann(vocals and guitar) along with Donna Matthews(vocals, guitar), Annie Holland(bass) and Justin Welch(drums). Before they had even released their first album in the UK, they had been on several soundtracks and had stirred up quite a lot of interest. When the selftitled album did come out in 1994, it debuted at number one on the charts in the UK. They then turned to the U.S. and were the first brit band to see big success there, beating bands like Oasis and Blur which before that hadn't made much impact on this side of the Atlantic. Elastica was able to sell over 1,000,000 copies in the states through their big hit, Connection and much touring. But with success and long touring the band began to fall apart and Annie left. Over the next few years Justine and what remained of the band attempted to record, the band basicly became non-existant and Justine went into seclusion for about a year. In 1999 Elastica finally reformed(although with line-up changes), a 6-track EP was released and the band played the Reading Festival. Early in 2000, Elastica released it's long-awaited second album, The Menace, to mostly good reviews in the UK. The band is now a 6 piece comprised of Justine, Paul Jones(guitar), Annie, Mew(keyboards, vocals), Justin and Dave Bush(keyboards and machines). On August 22nd of 2000, The Menace came out in North America and has recieved excellent reviews here despite having not had much air or video play. Elastica has made plans to relocate to New York to record their thrid album later this year...

So what do they sound like?: One of the most interesting and appealing aspects of Elastica's music is that, especially on the new album, it is very diverse and not confined by genre. The first CD was punky, spikey and sorta popish. It was, at it's core a rock album. The Menace really threw any sort of classification of Elastica out the window. Some songs are kinda techno-punk(Mad Dog God Dam, KB) others are nearly gothic(Human[which Justine said was redone to make it sound less gothic]), there is a deeply personal spoken word(My Sex), a B-52sish song(How He Wrote Elastica Man), an instrumental electronic track(Miami Nice) and pop songs(Nothing Stays The Same and their cover of Trio's DA DA DA) Basicly Elastica is a rock band that won't be confined by that label and doesn't sit in one place for too long.
