The Burwell family of Virginia is one of the oldest as well as the most widely connected famiies of the Old
Dominion; they are descended from the ancient famiy of Burwell, of Bedford and Northampton Counties,
England, and through the maternal side of the house, trace their ancestry to John Bedell of "Woolaston,"
Northampton Co., England, who died in the 15th century, and with whom the pedigree in "Camden's
Visitation," starts

Robert Walpole, Earl of Oxford, premier of England, and Horatio, Lord Nelson, were descendarts of the
Burwells through maternal lines. The antiquarian, Cole, says: "The family settled first in Colton Hall, in
Buddington, Hoxton Hundred, by marriage with Dusebough, and afterwards moved to Rougham,
Theodisteo Hundred and later to Harling-ton." The earliest mention of the Burwells in connection with the
Colony of Virginia, is of Edward Burwell, who was one of the grantees under the charter of May 30,
1609, from James I. The name of Minion and William Burwell also appear in the list of adventurers for
Virginia.
