Pilot 1055-C Foglights

Why the meltdown?

After running the 50w 886 foglight bulbs in my stock foglights, the heat eventually melted the housing, cracking the top of the housing, allowing water to get. To remedy the situation, I would put a small hole in the bottom of the housing (near the lens) and seal the top with some high-temp silicone sealant. This kept out water mostly, but moisture could still get through the small hole. After my second foglight cracked, I decided it's time for new ones.

So, I shopped around and didn't want to spend a bundle of money on a mostly aesthetic item. I found the Pilot 1055-C's at Autozone for about $25. They come with 55w H3 bulbs, wiring, switch, and mounting hardware. The housing is metal, and the lens is glass. Mounted on the car, the lenses just sparkle...much better than the stock plastic lenses. The Pilots have the ability to run 100w H3 bulbs with upgraded wiring, but that's overkill.

Results:

Wow! Much brighter! The beam pattern is more of a driving light, not a foglight, so I have to be careful for oncoming traffic and make sure they're properly aimed.

Mounting:

The best way to mount the foglights seemed to be take the old housings out of the stock foglight bracket and mount the metal bracket of the new Pilots onto the plastic foglight bracket using the supplied screws. After mounting, I had to grind the ends of the screws down so it would not rub the front fascia.

Wiring:

In order to utilize the stock wiring harnesses, I broke two old 881 bulbs and solder the foglight wires to the end of where the bulb was soldered. Hint: when looking at the wiring harness coming off the stock fogs the 12v+ wire is on the right of the little notch that sticks up: ( grd _|_ 12v+ ) if that makes sense. It's reversed if you're looking at the bulb though. I then wrapped plenty of electrical tape around the old bulb harness and wires to be watertight. Plugged them in and voila!
