  2. Marthy thanked Di van der Riet for her contribution to the BPW refuge for Battered Women and their children and welcomed Michelle Schubert who will take over her position on the committee.

  4. WORKSHOPS: Rebecca Freeth to compile a report on the various workshops.

    OFFICE AT COURT HOUSE: Room 126 - 9-12 Mon – Fri. 17 Volunteers have been trained. A roster has been set up. Volunteers are doing very well. (IB)

    To place ad + photo in George Herald with regards to the office at the court. (IB)

    To write thank you letter to the Magistrate for the use of the office. (IB)

    Sally to provide Michelle with a list of what is still needed in the office.

    APPOINTMENT OF MATRON

    JOB DESCRIPTION: Marthy, Irene and Jane Keen worked together on the advertisement for this vacant position.

    Read the proposed advertisement. (IP)

    To be placed in the George Herald on the

    18th of March. Closing date – 26 March. (IP)

    To draw up a job description.

    Deadline 6th of April. (IP)

    It was decided that the aim was to open the doors of the refuge at the beginning of April, and to slowly start implementing the procedures. The matron will also have to get use to the facility and procedures.

    GOODS RECEIVED An inventory to be drawn up of goods received

    to see what is still amiss. (MS)

  5. ROSEMOOR REFUGE:
  6. GATES. To be fixed. Partitioning to be done.

    Deadline – Saturday 20 March, 9:00 - 11:00.

    To organise a welding machine. (MVR)

    GARDEN. To find out from Danie Botha, DISA Garden Service whether he could cut

    the grass etc at the refuge. (MS)

    To arrange for the garden club to have a look at the garden. (MW)

    INVENTORY. Deadline. – 20 March, 9:00 – 11:00. Volunteers needed to assist. (MS)

    Urgently require a stove and fridge at the refuge.

    TELEPHONE. Once security is in place a chatter box to be installed in the refuge.

    Telephone to be installed in the office at the court. (MW)

    CONTRACT. Changes and additions to the building to be noted down. (MW)

    DEADLINE FOR ALL COMMITTEES TO GIVE FEEDBACK ON THEIR PROGRESS.

  1. A cell phone from Vodacom looks promising. Still to finalise. (MW)
  2. Telkom (Norman Hunt) to inspect the refuge administration office regarding the telephone line. A suggestion was made to just have an incoming line connected to the switchboard. (MW/IB)
  3. To discuss with Telkom the installation of a chatter box in the refuge. (MW)
  1. To deliver a desk and chair to the refuge administration office. (MW)
  2. Moira/John have offered to build up a computer for the refuge.
  3. To find out whether the refuge can make use of the computer in the rape crisis office. (DF)
  4. Offered to assist with translations from Afrikaans to Xhosa and vice versa. Will also act as a depot for donations for the refuge in the Pacaltsdorp area. (NV)
  5. Marthy and Riaan to get together to discuss the cost of phase for the refuge. Riaan to speak to Retief Kleynhans.. (RS)
  6. Gave information to Marthy regarding cleaning equipment. (EM)
  7. Finance. Section 21 to be established. The following names were suggested:

    (b) A 40 minute informative presentation to be done on the Refuge. (MW)

  5. To approach Suid-Kaap Stereo for a slot on the radio regarding the refuge.

  1. To approach organisations: Rotary, Round Table, Lions, Vryburgers, VLV. Jong Dames Dinamiek, Kerkselgroepe regarding the "ownership" of the rooms in the refuge. Fixing and furnishing. (MW)
  2. Marthy and Dave Weldon to see Christa van der Merwe at FNB regarding signing power on the cheques.

  1. Matters arising:
  1. Permission was given by the George Municipality (Health Department) to use the old Rosemoor Day Hospital as a temporary haven for battered women and their children. (± 6 month period with the aim to extend to 24 months).
  2. Report back. Jane Keen (NICRO) in Cape Town and Sandra Bredell (FAMSA) offered to assist with the training of volunteers for the refuge. The training would be done in groups. Mrs Peterson would also assist in sharing her knowledge on domestic violence. (MW)
  3. To schedule a meeting involving all the role-players in the field.
