Elmina Helen Bennett, daughter of Henry Grundle Bennett and Hanna Taylor, was born 23 August 1839 at Duck Hill, Montgomery County, Mississippi. She married first James Howard, son of Thomas Howard and Jemima (see Howard page), on 30 October 1860, in Carroll County, Mississippi.

Elmina Helen Bennett and James Howard had one child, Nathan Howard, born 7 Feb 1862 in Mississippi. Nathan married Ida Chambley. He died 15 July 1927, and is buried in Grenada, MS.


After the death of James Howard, Elmina Helen Bennett married James Harris Hood, son of Gardner Hood and Rebecca King. James was born in 1846 and died in 1932. Elmina and James had five children:

  1. Alvin Lee Hood, born 2 March 1870 at Duck Hill, MS; married Nettie Chambley; died 1936; buried at Calvary Cemetery, Carroll County, MS.
  2. John D. Hood, born 16 March 1873 at Duck Hill, MS; married Willie Rosella Morgan in Montgomery County, MS, died 14 February 1935.
  3. A. Lou Hood, born about 1875 at Duck Hill, MS; married James A. Blissitt; died before 1919.
  4. G. Henry Hood, born 7 March 1879 at Duck Hill, MS; married Mittie Taylor; died 2 August 1917; buried at Calvary Cemetery, Carroll County, MS.
  5. Lane Jesse Hood, born about 1882 at Duck Hill, MS; married Lillie Belle Blaylock.
