NWA 1988 (Windham Heel Turn +
Midnight Rider)
Time: 4hrs 8mins VQ: VG
-This tape contains the Saga of the Midnight Rider, a masked man
from Colorado who fights for good and wreaked havoc on the 4
Horseman and the other heels of the NWA in 1988. He appeared from
time to time in Florida and the Carolinas when heels ran out of
control. His last appearance was here for Jim Crocket Promotions
on TBS in 1988.
-Magnum T.A. was a top superstar in the wrestling business when
he nearly lost his life in a devastating car crash. He tried to
return as a commentator and on one Saturday in 1988 he was
confronted on TV by his long time rival Tully Blanchard.
Blanchard berates the crippled Magnum and in an act of ghastly
proportions punches his former adversary. Enraged, Magnum's long
time friend the AMERICAN DREAM DUSTY RHODES swings into action
and goes medieval on Tully with a Louisville Slugger. Several
officials try to restore order but in the fracas NWA President
JIM CROCKETT is nailed with the bat. JJ Dillion senses an
opportunity and sends a tape to the NWA Board of Directors who,
despite Crockett coming to the Dream's defense, SUSPEND DUSTY
RHODES FOR 120 DAYS!!!!!!
-Suddenly, without warning, a mysterious masked man named the
Midnight Rider arrived on the scene seeking revenge for the Dream
and becoming a thorn in the Horseman's side. JJ Dillion insisted
the Rider is Dusty Rhodes, and vowed to unmask him. If he did and
it was Dusty Rhodes then he would be BANNED FOR LIFE!!! This tape
contains the final chapter of the Midnight Rider Saga and many
great 4 star **** matches. Besides the Rider material, all the
wrestling on this tape is simply awesome.
-Ric Flair vs. Ricky Santana -- Flair won't release the Figure
Four so Sting makes the save
-Jimmy Garvin vs. Mike Rotundo (Clash I) -- Sullivan &
Stiener attack Garvin and Precious makes the save choking
Sullivan with a wire coat hanger!!!!
-Midnight Express vs. Fantastics -- An Awesome ****1/2 star match
-Road Warriors & Dusty Rhodes vs. Warlord, Barbarian &
Ivan Koloff --in a Barbed Wire Street Fight
-Lex Luger & Barry Windham vs. Tully Blanchard & Arn
Anderson -- Luger & Windham win the tag belts in a great ****
star match
-Ric Flair vs. Sting -- 1988's MATCH OF THE YEAR ***** 5 stars!!
THIS IS THE MATCH THAT MADE STING A STAR!
-Rick Stiener & Mike Rotunda vs. Ronnie & Jimmy Garvin --
Sullivan puts a hood over Jimmy's head and hits him with a metal
spike.
-Ric Flair plugs 4 Horseman Vitamins
-Midnight Express Squash -- Stan Lane puts a guy through the
podium and Cornette wears a microphone. Great Stuff
-Midnight Rider sends in a tape announcing his arrival!!!!!!!!
-The Midnight Rider viciously attacks a jobber.
-Luger & Windham vs. Tully & Arn -- In the GREATEST HEEL
TURN EVER Barry Windham turns on Lex Luger allowing the Horsemen
to win the titles. The Midnight Rider follows BW to the dressing
room and EVERY HEEL IN THE PROMOTION ATTACKS HIM. The show ends
with Windham putting on a Horsemen jacket and getting in a limo
with Flair. He holds up 4 fingers and then the Midnight Rider's
Mask, signifying his joining the 4 Horsemen. Windham had been a
clean cut babyface everywhere before this and so his heel turn
shocked the hell out of everyone. He was one of the best workers
in the world at this time and would become a great heel.
-Midnight Express vs. Fantastics -- Great Match as the Fantastics
win the US Tag Straps.
-Kevin Sullivan vs. Jimmy Garvin -- Prince of Darkness Match
-Jim Ross announces Dusty Rhodes has been re-instated after about
6 weeks.
-As you might have guessed the booker at the time was DUSTY
RHODES. During this period every wrestler had to mention Dusty or
the Rider in their promos!!! It is one of the most disgusting
self promotional booking decisions in history. The whole thing
was crammed down the fans' throats until they had no choice but
to dump the angle. For a good laugh listen to the cheap generic
cover of the song Midnight Rider. If you have never been
throughout the horrors of a Dusty Rhodes ego trip than this is
for you. If you are a Dusty Rhodes or NWA fan than this is for
you.
-Despite the inept booking this tape has some AWESOME,
UNBELIEVABLE MATCHES. 5 matches are at least ***1/2 stars or
better. The Barry Windham turn is a simple CLASSIC. Great NWA
Stuff outside of Dusty Rhodes' self promotional ego trip.
**4 hours of great NWA wrestling action and tons of interviews
most of which mention either Rhodes or the Rider. It actually
becomes quite amusing to hear these guys throw in their mandatory
mentions before cutting a promo on the guy they are actually
feuding with. Still this tape is filled with AWESOME MATCHES.**
