GUNNER OF HIS MAJESTY'S REGIMENT OF
ARTILLERY, WHO ON THE 4TH APRIL 1807, FELL IN
BRAVELEY DEFENDING HIS POST THE POWDER MAGAZINE
OF FORT RICASOLI AGAINST A BAND OF
FURIOUS MUTINEERS ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF
EVERY OTHER PART OF THE FORTRESS

THE COMMANDER OF THAT DETACHMENT TO WHICH
HE BELONGED ERECTED THIS MONUMENT AT ONCE TO
COMMEMMORATE HIS GALLANTRY AND STIMULATE
OTHERS TO IMITATE SO BRIGHT AN EXAMPLE

SOLDIERS ATTEND
AND IN EACH MARTIAL BREAST
THE SACRED TRUTH BE CAREFULLY CONFESSED
