Soul Trek (2005)

The Story:

Quite the change of pace from the usual "Let's pick a fight with an alien race and trash the Enterprise" Star Trek story, this one goes off in a totally different direction.
Captain Riker (Scott) gathers the crew together for a meeting on the bridge to inform the crew that he has had a "vision" of Montgomery Scott, the famous engineer of days gone by, and that Scotty has asked him to fly the ship to the planet of SOULIA, which is the former "Galactic Center Of Soul Music". In other words, a futuristic Motown. His mission: to save soul music. Right away, stereotypical Irishman O'Brien objects and is beamed off the ship. After listening to a soul music album that Scotty released shortly before his death, Dr. Crusher and Data analyze it to find out that it has subliminal messages placed in with the music. O'Brien, hot-headed and out for revenge, boards his ship, the USS SHAMROCK, and is in close pursuit. It all comes down to the arrival at Soulia, where the reasons for Scotty wanting Riker and his crew to come become clear...

Behind the scenes:

Proof that the idea for an offbeat movie can come along when you least expect it, Scott got the brainstorm for "Soul Trek" on his way to work one day.
"Don't ask me quite where the idea for this came, but I was driving to work one day and all of a sudden, I thought it would be interesting to combine soul music with Star Trek. Alakazam! SOUL TREK was born!" says Scott. This was also Scott's first film to be shot in a 1:85 to 1 aspect ratio. "I was pleased with the results, for it really made for some nice compositions. I've never been a top-notch cinematographer, but I was happy with a lot of the scenes and how they wound up looking."
